King John, there is an option missing, I make both. If making DVD's were quicker then I would just make DVD. But as the encoding and authoring and burning take so long I often make VCD's for the kids as they are not as discerning as me
And Baldrick did not say it is time to move on and forget VCD
We have changed our name to DVDRHelp.com. It does not mean that we are going to abandon VCD(SVCD,CVD,XVCD), it just means that we will focus more on DVD Recordable in the future and less on VCD. You can still use vcdhelp.com but you will be automatically forwarded to dvdrhelp.com.

I think it is valid to differentiate between the 2 options. Because although for me VCD's are not dead they are dying.

In an attempt to get the thread back on topic I voted 'I still make vcd's'.
At the present time I'm making nothing but dvd's but put this down to the novelty of my new burner, the incredible program 'dvd2one' and the massive increase in quality of my home movies of my son.
I must admit, thinking about it *right now* I can't see a time when I'll create anymore vcd's but I aren't prepared to ditch my software, yet.
It will eventually die, much like vcr's will in 18-24 months (I've already ditched mine and have a system which links up my living room tv/digital channels to all bedrooms so I'm recording straight to the pc now) but that's a couple of years away.

Mostly stuff I have captured of the TV (I have only ever ripped 1 DVD and that was just to see if I could do it), the stuff I capture for myself I will put onto DVD if it is something I want to keep. But for the kids VCD is good enough.
-
The same here...
I mainly encode from DVB transmissions. There are only few channels in Europe with full CCIR - 601 info, so if I want to store to any CD/DVD based media, I have to re-encode. My best option is 1/2 D1, so it is CVD or DVD depending the media I want to store.
I also make VCDs and xSVCDs (like sefy's SxVCD) only when I want to give to others some stuff, in an acceptable quality and small filesize.
I prevent things that way... (my number one enemy in the hobby: Commercial trading)
The bottom line is that the framesizes/resolutions/bitrates/etc of VCD and CVD can be used on DVD also. So, VCDs and CVDs gonna virtual exist in another media, for as long as mpeg (of any version) exist.
And that gonna be a long - long time....
The media only changes and the file stracture, the basis - the mpeg itself - is the same! So what's the big deal?
-
Is it the end of VCD, no. Is it the beginning of the end, yes.
At what point exactly did you think I was complaining. I was simply relaying the information about what media I do make, which I assumed was the point of the poll.
I used to make 100%VCD now it is only 10-15%
You really need to stop taking things so personally, its verging on paranoia.
-
It was not a complaint, but an obsevation. But fine, if you feel that way i'm leaving.
-
I still have young children, and for that reason alone, I have been doing VCD's.
However, as KingJohn pointed out to me, and as we are all realizing, these files files are becoming too big for a single cd. While it is nice to have a backup of a avi in case the kiddies mess up my dvd, it is becoming expensive to make vcds AND dvd on one movie file. Also, with it becoming so inexpensive to buy a dvd player that will play the files we are making, why bother with vcd. After you have done a few, except for the time it takes to convert them, it a no brainer to turn most of the files into dvd.
Does this mean the site would become Dvdhelp???

I'm guessing that most of us here don't have DVD burners and won't anytime soon.
I don't make DVD and am not interested until they become much much cheaper. And besides that my 500Mhz system isn't going to be able to make DVD's anyway (except rip & copy but certainly not record DVD from video input).
Plus my cable signal isn't good enough to make DVD's or SVCD's beneficial anyway.

No, that can't be the case, wouldn't exactly be a democratic system would it?
Kinda' makes my signature a case in point.

The price I paid for my dvd-r burner was superb for me, considering the increase in quality I'm achieving and that all the recommended dvd burners (Pioneer, Sony etc) were at least £70 ($100-ish) more expensive.
Saying that, whilst I spent many hours encoding with TMPGEnc and many more hours learning how to get the best out of it I never felt I was producing the best vcd/svcd I could, and suppose you could argue I've taken a lazy option in upgrading to dvd-r.
I'm far from a perfectionist but my main problem was spanning two disks -it really bugged me and was the secondary reason (behind quality) I upgraded to dvd-r.

Again, not wanting to take any side in an argument I know little about but I firmly believe in freedon of speech and for the record, before this argument deteriorated into a petty playground argument, I believe there was absolutely no need to amend the poll, it was very clear;
You either exclusively make dvd or you still make vcd - simple.
I do concur it would be difficult to take offence at your comments Craig, yet what you so eloquently failed to mention in your posts is the now obvious bad blood that exists between all parties.
I can quite clearly see how KingJohn would take offence at your comment when;
1) the poll was clear and
2) you clearly dislike each other.

As my signature demonstrates and more so as I'm trying to put forward a well-balanced, 'devils advocate' opinion, KingJohn deserves, at the very least, the chance to give his side of the story.
Below is his version of the facts, PM'd to me today.
I would not expect any decent moderator to edit this post

......Start of KingJohn's message.........
Lets set the record straight !
I have been here for a long time, take a look at how many posts I have made. When you make a lot of posts, after a while you are known to many people, a few months ago I quite being a moderator and left the forum, at that time the moderators were deleting posts when someone like me fought back against their sly remarks.
At the time Baldrick blamed a lot of it on me, and remove the ability to delete posts from everyone. But the moderators have a private room, and in there I accused them all of deleting posts and following me around trying to pick faults. At the time I joined the group it was a "Closed shop" nobody was allowed to voice their opinion against what they were doing.
So for more than a year I have put up with abuse by them, oh and they also use other usernames to come in to cause arguments. So after a while it becomes them and me !. When ever someone has a go at me, baldric sits on his ass and does nothing, he waits until I get really fed up and then has a go at me.
So you see, I have got pretty fed up with them all, so you can see why I get touchy when one of them posts their messages, as they know I will not tolerate abuse from them and will always fight back. As you can see from the poll it was not long before one of them has something to say about it.
You have to take into consideration the long term abuse I have had from these people, when I quit being a moderator, they all had a good laugh, they did post a lot of messages in the hidden topics, but I have a few loyal friends who passed them on.
I did come back after several months, but it was not long before they or someone they got to set me up started trouble again. the recent upset was the guides being hosted on http://www.fasttrackmovies.com/forum and to avoid further arguments in some of my posts I edited them with "Delete"
So Baldric immediately banned me, not because I am a really bad person, but because they don't want me here and answering back to the moderators. Take a look back on some of my posts to see some of the abuse I have got, but you wont see a lot of them, as when the moderators have had their say, the move them to a place people cannot see.
So they want to fight rough... So can I, today my lawyer issued a notice to vcdhelp to remove all my copyright guides within 7 days, and as you can see they have now been removed.
I have registered this account, not to come back and cause more trouble, but to let a few people know what sort of people these guys are. Instead I have been made "Technical advisor" at fasttrack, I have also been made "Verifier" so some of the movies you can download were verified by me. Not bad for an evil person ?
Also in this forum, you only had to say "The Two Towers", and you had everyone of those jump on you, I told Baldric 1 month ago that is site was going down hill, especially with people making more and more DVD's, it was not long before he responded with the dvdrhelp...
Well your free to make your mind up, but I would ask you to take a look at the number of posts I have made, and see if any of them have helped people, which is why I was here, but huh if anybody has a go at me, then I will fight back. You would have thought that a long standing member who has made so many posts, would get a bit more respect from these idiots, but unless you suck up to them, you will be outlawed.
You can if you wish post this messages "KingJohn sends is regards" no need to elaborate on it.
Why not visit a much better group of people at http://www.fasttrack.com/forum you wont get pounced on for talking about movies !
This membership username will be deleted shortly so no need to reply

Silky, with all due respect you have no place to comment. There is no conspiracy against kingjohn, and everything he said in that PM is basically false. If he hadn't gone back and deleted all of his old posts you could go and read for yourself why he was banned.
You agree not to post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-orientated or any other material that may violate any applicable laws. Doing so may lead to you being immediately and permanently banned
Now despite what you say about no self respecting moderator deleting your post, let's think this out. If Kingjohn was banned its because we don't want his inappropriate comments on this board. If he simply made the same inappropriate comments and used someone else to post them then how is that any different?
If you have a problem with this site than take it up with one of the moderators or Baldrick IN PRIVATE. This is not a soap opera and its not kindergarten.
-
This is the first confrontation I have had with King John, and at the time he was a moderator, I was not. So to say that we clearly disliked each other is incorrect. He may well have disliked me because I am a moderator, he does not seem to like them much.

I think perhaps you have misunderstood my intentions, this thread is the very first post I have read of this guy, I have never seen his guides and have therefore neither no axe to grind with him or reason to suuport him.

There is nothing to discuss. He violated the rules of this board numerous times so he was banned. The solution to all this is simple. I do not think Baldrick gives out perm bans. If he can show that he is willing to abide by the rules of this forum than he is welcome here, until then he remains banned.
We try to remain as fair and impartial as possible, people do not get banned on this site unless they deserve it. I do not think this was the thread that broke the camel's back. I think there were at least a dozen other threads that alone warranted a ban.
There were already several other almost identical posts/polls in existence before this one. Considering the lack of votes and the drastic turn this thread had taken, this thread is now locked.
