    Here's the setup:
AMd 1700+ with ECS K7S5A motherboard,
    512MB DDR
    Win XP pro with 2 drives 40GB(5400) + 100GB(7200)
    100GB drive is capture drive
    ATI 64Mb DDR VIVO

Here's the problem with I'm sure a simple answer:

When i capture in virtualdub using huffy from an interlaced video (VHS/satellite) it captures very well i.e. no frame loss, however when i preview my capture i get what looks like de-interlacing in there?? I have followed the guide here and installed new wrappers but i still can't get the video to play the way the way its supposed to. Is this a capture problem or a playing problem? Any ATI users out there to help a guy out?

    Thanks!

    2 reasons I don't answer somebody else's posts:

    1. I don't know
    2. not enough info to answer properly

Which category does my post fall into

I'm only plucking at straws here but it sounds to me like a software problem.
Have you tried capturing with anything other than Vdub?
I have virtually the same system (same board, video, bigger processor, lower mem spec) and use Vdub and huffyuv from a digital tv source without the problems you've encountered.
Sorry that's no help but at least you now know it can be overcome, somehow

  4. I currently cap at 480x480. Doesn't the interlace only show up during fast motion scenes? I've got the same card. cap with picvideo.

Actually any motion whatsoever and it looks like two frames sliding through a comb My settings are 720x480 YUY2 interleaved using huffyuv2.1.1--audio is DVD quality--The thing that gets me is that it isn't dropping frames, but not catching them correctly in the first place. This leads me (maybe incorrectly) to assume that it isn't a hardware issue but a software setting--like "leave video interlaced" or something? When you guys set yours up did you do anything special that isn't written in the guides? Also, do you think the WDM wrapper in XP Pro is to blame? maybe if you could throw some settings out I can see where (if) I differ.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Oh yah, I can capture at 15Mb/s 720x480 with DVD quality audio with no frame drops in MMC so I know my machine can handle the heavy duty stuff--unless of course virtualdub needs more to do less

I don't think so, I'm using it with XP.
When I put mine in I was given strict instructions on how to install the software (inc. Direct X through to the wrapper).
    I'll dig it out.
    Might help, might now.

Menace, I have the same card, (btw, how in the world are you able to capture in YUY2 colourspace, I'm searching everywhere?). Anyhoo, simply said, your monitor displays the effects of interlacing, because anything captured at that res, will play back interlaced. Another thing that is mentioned on many of the posts is that huffy isn't really a good play back codec. It's a fantastic capture codec as proof of when I make an SVCD or DVD stream, it's 99.9 percent as good as my VHS source.....In regards to your capture display as being good, it's just probably a front end visual, that doesn't have anything to do with what's actually being loaded onto your H.D. Just like if you were to start dropping frames, you wouldn't actually see it .....

    I don't know...

So what you are saying is that I might be capturing beautifully and yet because my display isn't a TV that it is coming out distorted? (I'm having visions of that Star Trek episode "the menagerie" but instead of big brained aliens, virtualdub is hiding the truth from me ) Well tonight when I get this work nuisance out of the way, I will capture, encode and burn and see how it plays--imagine if it is that simple (one part of me hopes not because then I look like a real tool!)

    I'll dig it out.
    Thanx!

If your final viewing is for TV, then don't worry 'bout the playback on your monitor. If you're encoding for VCD, then you have to either deinterlace, or cap at ???x240, cause VCD doesn't support interlace. If you're encoding for SVCD, then don't bother with deinterlacing.....btw, are you using standard drivers for your Video card, or updated ones? What version of Vdub are you capping with. I can only capture in uyvy colourspace (

As far as drivers go I can't recall right off the cuff--ATI has made the driver filenames as long as your arm these days so I'll have to get to my home PC before I can tell you. I know that the MMC version is 7.7.0.1.

So if my end result is a VCD (which it is) and the source is a disney VHS then you suggest i should just cap at 352x240 in huffyuv? I was under the impression that its best to get as much video info into the "uncompressed" AVI as possible? Do you do this? how does it turn out? Also, if I'm capping in the ATI MMC at 15Mb/s with all the settings to the max, do you think I'm going to gain much clarity/fidelity/quality by using virtualdub (just looking for your opinion)?

Ok here are the WDM, driver and MMC versions I am using (in that order)
    capture WDM-6-14-01-6178v1
    driver: wxp-w2k-radeon-7-81-021218a-007192c-efg (phew)
    MMC-7-7-0-1-noDVD

    hope that helps!

Thanx, I'll give it a try.....

Okay, here it goes. You want a VCD do you?? Capturing with Huffy compression will still get almost all the information you get from an uncompressed .AVI, but without the huge filesize. You don't need to capture above 352x240. Since a higher resolution produces interlaced artifacts. You should only capture at ???x480 if you're gonna output to SVCD or DVD ('cause they support interlace). If you insist on capturing at ???x480, then read on.......

Your second option is to capture your Disney video (assuming it's an original, and not from broadcast), at a resolution of 640x480 (still using Huffy), but perform an Inverse Telecine when your done (IVTC). This will allow you to have both fields captured, but removes the interlace effects without having to use deinterlace filters. If you're using Tmpgenc for VCD encoding, then simply use the correct template, and in the "advanced settings, there should be an IVTC option somewhere.

As far as capping at 1.15 mb/s, I'm pretty sure that that's "on the fly" .mpg creation (not my preffered method). But it's quick and easy. I don't quite understand the question, but you don't need Vdub after this is done. Simply load into Nero for authoring after that. The major reason I use Vdub for capturing, is because it lets me get a custom size frame capture, with huffy codec (darn YUY2 problem though). My ATI software seems limited....

Keep in mind, the ???x480 capture is what sets the quality apart from ???x240, and not so much the compression format. (insert comment here). Yes uncompressed is the best, but not near the trade off I have to make for filesize. The time and energy required for learning about deinterlacing is better off spent on learning about the wonderful world of SVCD and DVD which support interlace (mpg2).
