Kai, I have a question,
Using the beta of 42(not this v1) I succesfully converted StarWars episode 1 to SVCD. Here is my question.
Using the bitrate calculator in ffmpegx0.6, I selected NTSC SVCD and inputed the time. At 137 minutes, 3Cd's (80minute mode2)the bitrate is 2133kbit/s.
I should have gotten mpeg's with close to 800megs in each. Instead I ended up with 3 mpegs of (710),(710)&(213). What happened? Is the bitrate calculator in fffmpegx0.6 incorrect? Is it a problem with the 42beta? Is that fixed in v1?
What Bitrate calc do people use with 42 and get predictable results?
Thanks.. -
Hello Kaicherry,
First off thanks for all your hard work. Once I am able to use this thing, I will definitely be hooking you up via paypal. But so far no dice. I know I did the install correctly. I zapped the old stuff, installed the new forty-two and then the support files. But when I launch the program and drop a DVD on it, it just hangs there and does nothing. I have tested this on my new iBook and my Dual Tower, and I am getting the same result on both. So far I have tried Apocalypse Now and Signs. No go on either one. What gives?
Thanks,

saltydog -- make sure you read the readme AND the manual, if you haven't. You need to read the manual to get the app to work correctly.
Kai, Bilestyle, Chris, et al:
Excellent work guys. I noticed you're getting a lot of kudo's over at Versiontracker. Congrats.

shoot.... it's not working. When attempting to do "Signs" to 1 DivX CD I get an applescript error that says "sh: /tmp/.thsalami/statMsgs: Permission denied (1)" What the heck does this mean? The peculiar use of the word salami really upsets me.

something has messed with your OS X, not surprisingly
open a term, type
chmod 775 as an admin, or run Fix Permissions from Disk Utility.

Hey Kai,
Backing up my Shrek DVD (full screen version) to 1-CD DivX. In the testmovie, at almost every scene change, the screen pixelates so much that it looks like a checkerboard. It lasts a split second each time. This is similar to what was happening during testing. FYI.
IM me if you need any additional info...

i just want to make sure i'm doing this right, so in the manual where it talks about "more" and you can choose, type in the other sub or audio options, so in place of Audio EN (english) i would type in KO (for korean)? of lower case? does it matter??
cause i tired it once on lowercase and it didn't find the audio, i'm trying it on uppercase now, and i have the top most audio selected to "other" is that correct?
and on the first dvd i tried, i have had japanese laguage from the top audio selected and and english subs from the top subs selected, but it didn't wncode the subs on the preview.??
i followed the installation and the pop up window said everything seemed to install. any thoughts?

DVD's can lie, so you may have to do some detective work to find out which language code was used when the DVD was authored.
I have a copy of the Criterion Collection release of some Beastie Boys videos. In the section of the DVD where you can see different versions and/or remixes of the videos, the audio tracks for the remixes have some of the most outlandish language coding. Since all the audio is in fact English, the DVD authors decided to make each remix distinct by coding them with language codes such as Afrikaans, Catalan, Hungarian, etc etc.
You can use 0Sex to analyze the audio track(s) for the given title you want to transcode in forty-two. 0Sex reveals the language code used for the audio track you prefer to use. -
I'm trying to drag the DVD into the "Drag DVD here" spot, but nothing shows up. I've tried reinstalling forty-two three times. Any idea?
-
It appears it was a problem with the DVD. The DVD in question was Memento Mori, Korean version.
Another question, will there ever be a way to choose just which language/subtitle track to use? In some cases, there are multiple tracks encoded as one language (like Hong Kong releases, where both Mandarin and Cantonese are encoded as "Chinese").
I'm ripping A Better Tomorrow right now to test subtitles, but I want the Cantonese soundtrack and not the Mandarin soundtrack. DVD Info just displays both tracks as code "zh", and no difference. Is there a way to force Forty Two to use one or another? -
Would the beta testers/other users be so kind as to post how long it took to complete a DVD -> DVD-R project. Mine was running all night and after 12 hours was only 1/2 way through transcoding. Movie length is 123 minutes.
Should I expect this to take over 24 hours to transcode? I'm sure not complaining about 42, I'm thankful to have it. I'm just looking for some idea of how long each conversion should take on an average.
Thanks! -
How do we delete the stream.yuv files that get left behind if we stop the transcoding process? They don't want to die from within the finder.
Thanks -

If so, what movie did you use? -
To delete the stream.yuv file open terminal, cd to the directory that it is in (ie. cd users/movies) then type su rm stream.yuv

CJ of FL, you are not alone. I too can not get DVD>DVD-r to work with 42v1. I tried 2 different DVDs and it ejected both of them right after the preview just like the beta version did. I have not had any success with the DVD>DVD-r transcoding? If anyone could help out I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance -
Just installed 42 v1 and when I drag a dvd to the box... none of the options become available... they stay static. Any ideas?
-
Aneuploid,
Read the included manual carefully and follow the instructions exactly. Once you do that, the program's options should become available. -
For the people who are having issues with the DVD spitting out right after the preview: I had the same issue for a little while and really I don't know if it's fixed now BUT, when I didn't change any of the default names (i.e. movie.mpg for the movie name) and just hit the "choose" button all the way through, it actually went through and xferred the vob > avi (I have a 4.6G avi file in the directory now) and its currently transcoding. It's been runnin all night and now is about half way done, but the biles.mpv is still only 508M so... I dunno what'll happen in the end. In any case, I don't know if just choosing the default names for the directories and movie name will help, but that's the only thing I changed to get mine to actually go.

i too would like to know how to force 42 to use certain subs and certain audio, cause on the kiki's delivery service dvd, i choose english subs from the top subs button and always get the jap. subs, so then i put the subs to other and then just typed in "EN" for eng. subs in hopes that would work but no. and on spirited away, i tried that too and i couldn't get any type of subs let alone eng. ones. more info on how to properly use the the "more" options would be greatly appreciated, cause on my sassy girl, it wouldn't find the audio, i put lang. to other and then when to the options and type in "KO" for the korean audio track, and nothing, but the thing is there are 3 korean audio tracks all listed KO in that info window, the first is stereo ac3, the second dts and then the 3rd stereo the commentary, would it be possible in a future version to maybe just type in the audio/subtitle track number maybe?? since there are multiples of the same language?? cause some dvd's will have 2 english subs, one for reg. subs and then the other for closed captioned subs. just wondering.
so is the default bit rate 4000?
also the one dvd i got to work so far is still encoding, started at 3am, it's now 12:30 pm and it's just over halfway through, on dp 800, with 1 gig ram. if that helps judge the time.
all the above was for dvd to dvd transcoding.
pantspants on, pants off, pants the floor. -
Everytime I try to create an SVCD from DVD the preview has the right audio track, but the final mpg has the commentary track. The three movies I have tried only one has worked. Is their anyway to select which audio track is used? And why does it use the correct one in the preview? This has happened on the older version of 42 and version 1.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! -
When the support program "fetches" the needed files does it have to connect to the internet? I don't have access to the internet at my house, thus making it difficult to install if access is required.
-
no, it doesn't.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté." -
I tried my first DivX in the QT friendly format last night. As was the case with the old version of 42 the AVI is very difficult to deal with. QT6 will play it after "validating" but as before any attempt to jump to another scene results in an extended wait with the spinning ball. VLC will also play it, but any attempt to jump scenes locks it up. Mplayer has all sorts of dostortion and tearing issues. Mplayer is the only one that has video quality issues. The 3ivx codec (that this encode didn't use) was the one that had the least playback issues across multiple players in the old version. Maybe this stuff will improve as the DivX codec improves? The new version is certainly an accomplishment in terms of ease of use. By the way the preview AVI has the same terrible distortion and tearing issues when the preview runs, I assume because it uses Mplayer.
