There are two DVD burners featured for purchase as stand alone replacements for your computer. Best Buy has the Pioneer DVR-A03 listed as a Best Buy exclusive at $799.99 and CompUSA has the Que!DVDBurner listed at $549. It says it is a DVD-R and DVD-Ram Internal EIDE Drive. They also list a firewire and USB burner drive both at $699.99 each. I wasn't sure where to post this so here it is. You can go to the two respective sights and view their ads to see the pictures if you want.

I'm not convinced that these things would be real useful yet as I suspect that most DVD players probably won't play DVD-R media anyway.

  3. zzyzzx, most new DVD players will play DVD-R's without a problem. I burned a DVD-R in a Mac at work and took it to Circuit City and tried it in a bunch of DVD players and all the Pioneer, Apex and Sony's handle the disc fine.

  4. I wouldnt buy one until the format war between DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and DVD+RW is over.

  7. That's all well and good, but the cost for blank media is still through the Fargin' roof! When they get to be under 5 bucks per disc, I'll consider it. By then, The "war" should be over too. Of course, by then, there'll be a new video format introduced with "even BETTER resolution! 1416x960! All on an impervious gleaming cube, about the size of dice."
    ...or something

    i wanna wait.

    does dvd-plus-rw also write dvd-plus-r

i can't type the plus symbol.

  9. If the +rw drive will also write -r's, then it could be worth it. I know a site that has dvd-r's for $7 and even the pioneer brand for $8, so the prices are coming down already. The -r's will probably be cheaper(just like cd-r), and the only reason I would use the +rw(if the -r is just as compatible) would be on test, so I would waste $7 each time.

  11. this stuff scares me....still though it's a better chance than SVCD (more dvd players that'll it'll play on) but you can't beat the price of cd-rs still.

  14. 2.4x dvd write is ass rapingly fast. Faster than a 24x cd burner. It will burn 4.7 gigs in just over 20 minutes, which is over 3300 kbps. Nice, even for dvd burners just starting off!!

I just thought that phrase needed some clarification.

  16. Guys,

Hi all. I wanted to ask a related question about DVD burners. I have seen the very same ads in question but held off buying because I wanted to know the following. Does anyone know if software exists to burn a dvd-r with 4-5 vcd quality movies in a menu structure similar to Nero's VCD Menu template which can then be played on a standalone (Apex, Pioneer, Afreey, etc.)?

I will wait for the prices of both the media and burners to decrease further before buying. Maybe by that time, Ahead or some other company will release it? I love collecting dvds but I am looking at it from a vcd hobbyist's perspective. Laters.
    Regards,

    The Daywalker

General rule for the Xes is(i've read this in SmartComputing)
ON CDs 1x= about 150kilobytes per second.
ON DVD 1x= about 1.5megs per second. so do the math.
