XVID video not as clear as divx

Have been trying to get a sharp picture with xvid movie, it seems to be a bit out of foucus or fuzzy picture. I have encoded divx movies with no such problem. Or is this typical for xvid movies? Have been checking forums but cannot find similiar problem.
I am going crazy trying to figure this one out, can anyone shine some light on this problem.

have you ripped the file yourself from a dvd and are converting using the xvid codec?

if so why? use divx5 - far simpler and less issues

if it is a fuzzy source avi file though, you can't make something out of nothing.

try and explain the problem more clearly then you should hopefully get some better answers
