  1. Hello,

I've checked the media thread and other forums, but don't see a definite answer...

Got my 500A 3 days ago and got a 50-pk Ritek 2x Silver/Purple G03 media from MeritLine. Burnt 3 disks (all in 2x) so far, no coaster, but the Sony can't read one of them for some reason (light's on for a minute or so, then nothing and Windows Explorer says "Please insert a disc" or something like that) while my Samsung SM308B reads all 3 no problem. All burnt with RecordNow DX, 2x and option "Write and Verify" (i.e., although it passed the "verify" phrase, the Sony just wouldn't read it later on).

Anyone sees the same problem with Ritek 2x media? Is it not stable enough for 2x burning?

    Thanks for any reply!

  2. I have the exact same burner and use the exact same media as you. No problems whatsoever. I can read the burned discs using both the burner and my dvd drive. Plays flawlessly in my playstation 2. Only difference is I use Nero and DVDdecrypter to burn.

  3. This problem has been posted before. You need to play an original DVD in the sony and set the region code. After this it should play them fine. I even think its posted on the sony web page under support.

No...it's not it won't play...for that particular one is simply won't read. It's just a data disc not movie and the drive keeps reading/spinning for a minute then nothing happens.

    And you used 2x also?

Maybe it's just that particular one disk is no good...gonna try more...thx all!

  5. Yes I used 2x. I will tell you this, I bought a 10 pack of the ritek and none of them would get recognized. So I brought it back and exchanged it. The new pack worked flawlessly. So you may have gotten some bad disc. My 50 pack so far is going strong.

    thx for the info!

see the weird thing in my case is, it went totally OK during burn+verify just it can't be read afterwards...is that what you meant by "not recognized"?

yup I just sent meritline a mail regarding that issue...and will see what they say.

  7. No, the issue you are speaking of I believe is the rigion issue. The issue I mentioned is the new blank disc was not even recognized.

Here is the link about not being able to read burnt media in the sony drive and how to fix it.

No...like I said it's data disc not movie, and it's so bad that not even Windows Explorer shows the file content.

I did a little more testing, and the conclusion is - my Ritek disc are not good for 2x with 1.0f. I burnt a 3 more disc (all data) with 1x, and the file content shows up on Windows Explorer about 10-12 seconds after closing the front lid (which is like normal, just like the supplied Sony DVD+RW). For the 2x disc, at least 30 sec or just no show.

Even this page says the "Silver/Purple" 2X is only good for 1x with 1.0f...

    http://www.ebisschop.nl/dru-500a/

I'm now under the impression that the Ritek 2x media is only 1x certified, and the shops are selling them as 2x just because most (if not almost all) ppl are having no problem using them under 2x with A04/5 and 500A...

  9. Well just to let you know the ones I am using are silver and purple. I have burned over 30 of them a 2x. The avg burn time is 27minutes. Like I said about the region problem, this is a result that after burning a dvd movie, the sony will not read the disc until you select a region for the drive. The batch of ten that I originally purchased were bad. The drive would not recognize the blank media so I was unable to even burn with them. I returned those for a new package and the new 10 pack worked fine. So I purchased a 50 pack for $39.99 and those have also been burning at 2x. I intend on purchasing a 25 back since they are $19.99 at pc club locally. All of which are silver and purple. I am running the 1.f firmware. It is also my belief that Sony will be releasing a new firmware soon that will increase compatability and also increase the dvd read speads. It will match the firmware of the newly repackaged sony dru500ax which for purposes and intents is the same drive repackaged with the new specs of burning 4x DVD+R.

  10. I did that play movie set region thing and still the same (no file content), so the chance is the medias that I have are not that good

Anyway I'm gonna contact Meritline and see what they say...

BTW you monitor this board constantly or something? Such a quick response!

can't be burn at 2x even that they are reported by burning program as 2x but burning time of full disk is still around 60min. Just adding experience with this media.

The problem is, Ritek G03 is around as faked media too now.

You can get 2 batches with the same ADVDInfo. 1 works, the other is crap... The old sad story.
