I have an avi file which when encoded as per the vcdhelp method using tmpgenc makes a very narrow film when viewed on uk widescreen tv. I used the "keep aspect ratio" as per the guide. Is there anyway of making the image larger to fill more of the screen as at the moment its split into three. ie. top black border, film, bottom black border

Change the Source Aspect Ratio to 16:9 in advanced settings tab. Tmpeg has a preview function in the file menu,it will show you what it looks like before encodeing.

The Source Aspect Ratio for DivX is 1:1 (VGA). If you don't want any black borders, next to Video arrange method select "No margin (keep aspect ratio)". TMPGEnc will remove the black borders and your output MPEG will be Full screen. The only problem is some parts of the sides will be cut out of the output MPEG.
Hope That Helps!!! -

there is a way to have letterbox and centre the video, but it requires a avs script and dll filter, check out the KVCD Forum, there and just either ask or browse the forum for the flter its called gripfit_preview
