I just encoded a DV AVI file (telecined from Super 16) with TMPGEnc (PAL, VBR 7000), DVD Workshop (PAL, VBR, Max 8000) and MyDVD (Setting: "Best") and are very suprised with the results i got. The blacks in the picture turns grey with both TMPGEnc and DVD Workshop's built in encoding, while it stays just about as black as the source file with MyDVDs built in encoding. I have not compared how the different encoders deals with motion, but if I can't find much difference when I look into that aspect I don't see why I shouldn't use MyDVD to encode???

  2. Hmm... I was very disapoitment with result from MyDVD. Avi captured with Pinnacle DV (firewire) card and Pinnacle Studio 8. TMPGEnc and Studio 8 were much better. I saw a lot of pixalation during fats movement in my home video that was encoded by MyDVD. But I don't remember setting in MyDVD. Maybe I will try one more time.

Basically what I'm saying is that I'm not satisfied with how TMPGEnc deals with the blacks in the picture - It's actually so bad that I don't see I will be able to use TMPGEnc for encoding, unless there is some setting that can fix this problem.

For DV source, you must tick the Output YUV data as Basic YCbCr not CCIR601 checkbox in the"Quantize matrix" tab. (TMPGEnc)

why I shouldn't use MyDVD to encode???
It's slower than TMPGEnc. If you encode movies all day long you will be wasting a ton of time.

It only encodes to full DVD specs.. 720x480, default bitrate. You can't encode any custom format like 1/2 D1 as you can in TMPGEnc.

Those are the 2 most important reasons and I'm sure there are more.

MyDVD encodes much faster than TMPGEnc on my Duron 1300. Half D1 resolution is not necessary for me.
But I'll look try the Output YUV data as Basic YCbCr not CCIR601 checkbox in TMPGEnc.

Also MyDVD encodes sound into PCM format that takes much more space then MPEG2.

I ticked the "Output YUV data as Basic YCbCr not CCIR601" in TMPGEnc and it looks fab! The contrast is much better now. Is there any other settings I should tick for DV avi source when encoding to MPEG-2?
