I see where both units have "editing" capabilities. What specifically can you do with these units? I am looking to copy a lot of my Hi-8 and old VHS "home movies."
Panasonic claims: "Easy Video Editing"
Random access makes it easy to perform non-linear editing using just a single DVD Video Recorder, with no need for additional editing equipment.
What does all this mean?![]()
Thanks

Philips have basic editing features (delete/hide/divide a title, rename a title, manually set chapter marks) but edits done on DVD+RW disc are compatible with standalone DVD players. However, edits done on DVD+R will only play on the DVD recorder itself and will be ignored by standalone DVD players.
Besides having basic features as Philips, Panasonic also has non-linear editing capability (ie, you can specify the order in w/c the segments are played). But the DVD-RAM disc the Panasonic machines use is not compatible with most standard DVD players. It's true that Panasonic can record to DVD-R disc, but you cannot do non-linear editing on it. -
Just wanna add that the Panasonic machines with built-in HDD is capable of doing non-linear editing (ie set up playlists) which can then be recorded to DVD-R.
