What does the setting "Outuput YUV data as Basic YCbCr not CCIR601" do in tmpgenc. What effect does it have on the video and when should i check it and when should i not.

Enabling this cause the 8-bit value for the components to be of a value between 0 and 255 in YCbCr, and not the CCIR601 values of 16 to 235.
you know it's the anti-Midas touch when all you touch goes to shit.............. -
in other words, the picture becomes a just little bit darker as the range of motion (As a waveform) is cropped just a little.
It's about like the difference in using TV and PC modes in DVD2AVI -
It doesn't just make it darker, it increases the entire picture contrast by a little bit. It won't make much difference, really. The average TV and most PC monitors won't show a considerable difference in those upper/lower 16 shades range, ie between 235 and 255, 0 and 16 - and this is exactly what the setting's for, to ensure you don't lose any detail in the muddy dark bits/overbrightened parts. I've converted plenty enough DivXs using the setting both on and off, and the one with the greatest 'dynamic' range (from very shadowy bits to super-bright whitelight explosions) looked just as good or better with the 'compressed' luma range. If my TV was a bit better I might have output at 0-255 for blacker blacks and brighter whites, but for now I'll play safe and preserve the details. The film's daylight scenes are washed out enough already
However if you're converting, say, from another MPG or DV, these files are already clipped to 16-235 (and DVD rip DivXs? hence the gunky 'not-quite-blacks'?) so having it further compressed will mean your dynamic range could fall to say 30-210... in this case you want to enable the setting.-= She sez there's ants in the carpet, dirty little monsters! =-
Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!
