Sony DRU-500A, fail installing, please help!

Hi,
I do not succeed installing my new Sony DRU 500A nad am getting desparate.
I tried to connect the drive on secondary IDE ans master or as slave, on prim. IDE as slave, together with or without the Toshiba DVD ROM drive, but whatever I do, the PC hangs up half way during booting. Reset allows my to start up in "safe mode", the Sony drive has been registered in the device manager, but there is a new questionmark "other components -- PCI Multimedia Audio Device"
I use Win 98, second edition, German, so I am not sure, if the expressions "safe mode" and "device manager" are accurate translations.

Check with your motherboard manufacturer for any BIOS updates and/or driver updates. Also check with the Windows Update site. Yes, those are accurate translations. I had to flash my Promise Ultra Controller Card and install a new driver to get the DRU-500A to play well with Windows XP.

Uninstall any DLA sofware. In my case it was InCD. I had sane simptoms until I have got rid of it.
