  1. I know this is going backwards but I am trying to copy my DVD's to VHS so the kids can watch them in the van. I have an AIW Radeon, however when I try to record the copy protection gets in the way.

I have searched on this site and have found nothing. Everyone seems to go the other way.

Is there a simple way or do I rip to a format (which) and then play it back to record on the VCR?

    Thanks anyone!

Modify the DVD player to remove macrovision
Sometimes there are commercial kits you can install yourself

There have also been some inline devices "Video enhancers"

  3. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

As I read your post, I realized what I meant was I am playing the DVD on my PC with an Hitachi GD 2000BX (about 3 yrs old) through my ATI AIW DVD player. The inline filter or chip modification wouldn't work here.

Is there software or would ripping to the easiest possible format (AVI?) and then playing back on my PC to a VHS player get rid of the copy protection?

    doh

There use to be a file you removed out of the ATI folder, that got rid of macrovision protection. I guess the quickest way would be to record direct to VHS, however if you play a copy from your hard drive, can you record that to VHS ?, as a ripper would only take a short while to copy the DVD to your hard drive.

Smartripper can remove the macrovision and save a copy of the DVD to your hard drive, then use something like PowerDVD to play that copy, then record it to tape.

See this, but you wont need to convert it later with DvdX so just follow the guide with smartripper.
