  1. Is it possible to create a "enhanced" vcd? A cd disc that has a vcd part that will play a vcd movie when inserted in a stand alone player, and a cd-rom part "content" that will be available when disc is inserted in a cd-rom drive. Something like a commercial dvd that has a movie and a game or other feature available on one disc. Link to a tutorial or explanation will be greatly appreciated.

    TIA

Yes, VCD/SVCD can have CD-ROM data, but you are limited to ISO9660 (8.3) filenames. How you add your own files/folders to the ISO9660 track depends on what software you use to author your VCD, with VCDEasy you just drag the files in to the "ISO Files" section.

I went fairly in-depth about this in a previous post:

Check out lk's fork of VCDImager. You can get more info on this at Vitualis' VCDImager Tools website or at http://www.labdv.com. With this tool, you CAN add longish filenames to the ISO portion of the disc. Now, the XML text will have to be tweaked by hand, but for LFN it's probably worth it.

Do current versions of windows reliably support ISO9660 long filenames? I remember having to restrict filenames on my cross-platform CD-ROMs to 8.3 for Windows. The only long filename format that worked reliably in Windows was Joliet and I didn't have a decent tool to create hybrid ISO9660+Joliet CDs at the time.

  5. The ISO Level 2 filenames created with lkVCDxBUILD / lkVCDImager seems to work well...

It's a pain in the arse to edit the XML for the long filenames, but definitely worth it. However, ISO Level 2 still isn't Joliet and there are some limitations (in terms of length and character set).

Oh good, it's so nice when Microsoft decides to support an accepted standard. Having to look up filenames from TRANS.TBL files sucked. Maybe I'll look in to that software if I start putting more data on my VCDs.

  7. Just rechecked on my older machines (with the Official VCDHelp.com PAL/NTSC Demo Video-CD that also uses ISO Level 2 filenames).

I can definitely confirm that the long file names work well on WinXP, Win98SE and Mandrake 9.
