    I just downloaded Rush Hour 2 and it is in AVI format. I was wondering if these work on DVD players

    no, dvd players play VCD or SVCD. Both formats require MPEG files.

    Select your favorite encoder at the tool section.
    I recommend TMPGEnc to start, because it is free, there are good guide available at this site and most people of this forum use it, so it is easy to get help if you need it.
