    Hi!

I am trying to convert MPEG-1 files created using ATI's Multimedia Center to VCD compliant MPEG's using TMPGEnc, and the resulting files seem to have audio "crackles" that are not present on the original MPEG's.

I am recording video from a VHS using an ATI TV Wonder set for MPEG-1 352x240 2.40 MBit/Second. The files look great for my purposes, except for a bit of fuzzz at the very bottom of the picture.

In TMPGEnc, my settings are VideoCD NTSC with the following filters enabled : Source Range (To eliminate the beginning and ending crap I don't want) Sharpen Edge (Set to 100 for both the vertical and horizontal) and Clip Frame (5 pixels removed from both the top and bottom, masking enabled)

Conversion only takes about an hour and a half on my machine, which is certainly livable, and the end product is FANTASTIC for my purposes... The Sharpen Edge filter really helps the old Star Trek tapes If I could just get rid of these audio crackles it would be perfect...

My system is an AMD Duron 800mgz overclocked @ 959mgz, ASUS A7V-E motherboard, 256 megs PC 100 ram, and my ATI TV Wonder. The rest of my system is probably irellevant. Could this be a problem with the VIA chipset? I do not have a soundcard and am using the onboard VIA AC'97 audio controller, however like I said the crackles do not show up on the MPEG's created with the ATI card.

    Please help!!!

If you are using a joint audio/video source file in TMPGEnc extra noises such as crackles and pops are often reported. Best thing to do is to seperate your audio and video feed before using TMPGEnc.

    Excellent idea!!!

I'll first run the video through my filters, and then isolate the audio using the exact same frame range, and then smoosh them together using the VCD template... Thanks!!! I'll post to let you know if it works!

  4. I have this same problem when my source audio stream to TMPGEnc is mpg encoded ... which is what ATI MMC grabs audio in. I solved all my sync and audio quality problems by switching to virtual dub for capture. VDub allows you to capture audio in uncompressed wav format. When i feed TMPGEnc a wav instead of an mpg encoded audio stream, the pops and clicks are gone.
