HI All,
I am planing to donate some of my time to a non-profit organization to convert for them 100's of VHS to DVD. I know I can capture them using my Digital camera as a bridge, encode then using tmpgenc and then burn them. But I am looking for a capture card that can capture and encode to mpg2 in realtime, so I can burn the mpg2 to DVD.
What do you recomend?
Regards,
Jose

Any experience with the Snazzi* III DVD Creator?

Most capture cards out there will do the job that you want provided that you have a quick system so you dont lose too many frames. I use a Leadtek Winfast TV2000 XP card and I can capture straight to DVD format or any other format for that matter. However I would recommend recording to huffuv or mjpeg and then converting to DVD.

Thanks eats**t&die
Is the quality of the captured mpg2 bad using the card?
I am used to the tmpgenc quality...
Thanks a lot! -
I mainly use the card for recording the television and the picture quality always comes out looking as good as it went in, if you know what I mean. So provide you have a good quality VHS you will get a matched result but it will never be better. When i capture a movie from the tv straight to DVD, I cant really tell the difference between my capture and an actual DVD. That is on a normal tv or monitor and provided your not watching the screen from 10 inches away. This card is not the best for audio quality however but from what you say your not gonna be trying to achieve any surround sound or anything like that. I bypass the tv card and put my audio input straight to the sound card this provides good results. Goodluck.

There are two all-purpose video capture cards you might consider. The ATI All-In-Wonder (at least 16 MB memory) and the Visiontek Xtasy Everything. Both have onboard memory that digitizes the analog signal to MPEG-2. Both accept coax/S-Video/RCA inputs. You can find these cards use on ebay in the $40 to $100 range. If you go this route, make sure the card comes with cables and software.
To record real-time, the specs require a P-III/500MHz or more. I recommend a P-IV class with at least 256 MB Ram.
Also, I use the Visiontek for both VHS and cable TV. I find the sound to be good from both, and a burned HBO movie to have better quality that the video tape. -
power vcr 11 will capture real time to all specs!
but i find it better to cap at 720 x 480 and encode with tmpgenc. it seems much better and fairly quick . but if quality is not the biggest issue get power vcr ll and a cheap capture card (i use tv wonder ve 50 $) or pass through -
I use the Ads Instant DVD for straight vhs captures and dvd9 rips that are too big to fit on a DVD-r
Picture quality is decent if you have a good clean system just like any of the other devices out there
Captures straigth to Mpeg 1 or 2
I use Uleads movie factory to author and burn with no coasters. -
Um. If you are capturing with your digital camera, why not capture with your firewire card as DV. then convert the DV to MPEG-2. This will make the best qulity.

Use the happuage 250 PVR card($149) it will get you great captures ready to burn to a DVD providing you author the MPEG2 first use something like Uleads Movie factory they have a free trial download and it is very simple to use and you can burn to VCD, SVCD or DVD. This is the cheapist way, if you could afford a DVD Home Recorder like the Pansonic DMR-E30 it will provide perfect copies of VHS tapes, use $1 DVD ritek media, but your talking $600 also.

I second the Hauppauge PVR250. It gives good quality realtime hardware mpeg2. Also it comes bundled with Ulead Movie Factory for the DVD authoring.
