Hi!
I've been making (S)VCD's for some time now. Letely I have bought the SONY DVD writer and I wanted to put 5 svcd's on a dvd. to my horror!there is no well known porgram that does this! There is a faq here on vcd.com with tmpyenc but that is very tedious!
If I make a svcd, burn it and copy the contents to hd then burn this content to dvd and making sure that the svcd track is on track 2 and the content on track 1 I can play in on all my dvd players!!!
but since I can't write 5 eps to CD I have a problem here because I don;t want to start editing the svcd support files!
So can someone direct me to a program that can accept svcds and writes them to dvd as if it was a svcd disk? (and I don't mean convert them to dvd format because that would mean only 2 svcds and a waiste of space because the quality won;t get better)
Thanks!
Sabrina.

you would have to trick the authoring program into thinking it is a dvd by using dvdpatcher. i did this and then burned it to a dvd but the picture was only on 1/2 of the tv screen. i read that it could do this and that there is a way to fix it but i am not interested enough in it to do it. i figure i mise well keep my svcd's on cdr and start encoding my movies to dvd spec and burn to dvdr. once you use the dvdpatch you can author the movies in almost all authoring programs and then burn to dvdr

OK thanks
I've been testing the hints on this site to make it work. It all begins by converting the seq*.dat file into 2 parts.
Now my source is *.mpg files in SVCD format and not a SVCD disk yet. Need I do the same trick here or might there be an easier way?
My setup:
I have made 4 svcd files from my camcorder a while ago and I burned them to cd for the family. I could burn them again and then copy the *.dat file back to hd but that seems like adding another step.
oh well I keep testing ... -
OK I've done everything on this website and it works for 1 file on a dvd.
However 1 file still takes up more then half of the dvd! I thought I could get 5 svcd's on a DVD with ease!
I'm using Sonic atm that came with the sony writer. Maybe I need to use a different authoring software?
If so, can anyone recommend something that will wordk with the svcd files on dvd trick?
Thanks!

Hi, Sabrina!
Have you tried to convert that files to 352x480? I think that is acceptable as one of the DVD standards. 480x480 isn't a DVD format.
See DVD specification. I think you will find here, at vcdhelp. -
Thanks! AngusMacGyver,
It works now. converted to 352, added to software, change back to 480, author it and burn. works like a charm. my 480x576 pal svcd is now a 16x9 version
Shame I only can squeeze 3 on them instead of 4. I thought 800Mbx5 fits perfectly but 1 file is 1 Gig big! dunno why so I can only get 3 on them and have 800 meg left
Thanks! -
Dear Sabrina,
I didn't understand what you did. Have you said you converted to 352 and back to 480? Well, it's important it worked...
About few disk space:
It depends how long are your films and the bitrate you are using in each one. To calculate average bitrate do this (Considering DVD size = 4.3 GB for safety ~ 450000 kB or 36000000 kbit):
Bitrate = (36000000 / Total Time) (time in secs)
Remember that you are calculating video + audio bitrate. You must subtrate audio bitrate from that calculated value.
If you prefer, you can contact me:

Hi!
In the svcd-dvdr guide:
"Launch your DVD Authoring application and "just" add the m2v file as video source and it will automatically add
the audio file. After you added the m2v files you save the project and close it. Then you change back the
headers in the SVCD MPEG files,"
I changed the headers back before I started. If I did not the width would still be 253 and That looks awful!
The bitrate of these svcd's were 2500000. so pretty good but I found out that the svcd's I have are all very high quality so they never fit more then 3 on a dvd. The ones that are lower quality can fit but I don't want them on dvd!
I will start some calculations BEFORE I start the timeconsuming work next time. I'm glad I only have 4 of them to do!

Ok, Sabrina.
Remember you've reduced the resolution of your files. So, you can reduce their bitrates with no noticiable quality loss.
-
Thanks for all your answers!
So when it's time to change the resolution back to 480 I only patch this and keep the 2500000 instead of the 3500000 value?
Thanks!
Sabrina! -
ah I forgot that I did this already!
The svcd's are in 2500000 bits/sec and I've patched them for this value.
but if a 3.5 mbit/s normal dvd can hold up to 120 min of film can a 2.5 mbit/s svcd converted strean not hold up to 120/2.5*3.5 = 168 minutes?
I get the feeling I did somethng wrong here.
get .mpg -> split into audio & video -> audio 44.1 to 48 khz -> patch video from 480 dvcd to 352 dvd -> author software load films -> save project -> repatch 352 -> 480 -> author software make disk !
during adding of films it takes 1.2-1.3 gig for 1 svcd so that is way too much! I'm using sonic btw.
He does not convert it when I write to dvd because the progress bas is very quick and it starts to burn in 1 minute!
When I add vcd's (that are the right size but sound is not good) it's takes minutes to even get 1 vcd converted!
I will get those 4 svcd's at 2500000 bits/sec on 1 dvd , i know it. Takes time ...

A DVD (4.7 GB) of 120min has about 5 Mbit of bitrate (video + audio).
I think you will find the way. I'm here to help you, even I'm not having a DVD recorder...
I'm sorry, I'm curious... where are you from? -
Sabrina,
You can use the ReMPEG2 to reduce te bitrate ( and size ) for that file that is 1 Gb, and reduce the size to 800 Mb or even less.
I use the resolution of 352X480 to all my DVD Mpegs, then I can reduce the bitrate and size to an low value without noticeable loss of quality.
Try, but remember that ReMPEG2 is very slow....
