  1. I am hoping someone can help me out. I am new to backing up DVDs, so any help would be appreciated. I am using SmartRipper to rip the VOB from my own DVD. From there I use DVDx to encode into a MPEG1 for burning onto a VCD with Nero.

I have never had an error message or anything like that – I have always had successful copies. The problem is the video quality is a bit “blocky” no matter what I do.

Can anyone give me a couple of easy things I should be looking for? I don’t know enough to fool around with this and know the effect of the changes I am making.

Any help would be appreciated and I anticipate giving back to the forum when I solve my issues.

    Thanks.

  2. Try using TMPGenc to encode instead of DVDx. I am not familiar with DVDx but I am with TMPGenc and it does a good job of encoding MPEG1/2. I think more people would then also be able to help you out if you use TMPGenc as alot of people use it.

If DVDx allows it and your DVD player can play them, you could increase the bitrate and make an XVCD, or make SVCD's instead of VCD's, which have twice the bitrate of VCD's. One last thing, make sure Nero is not re-encoding your VCD's before you burn them, Nero does a horrible job at encoding.

Just a couple of suggestions........hope they help.

I use DVDX and get good results.

    I prefer to use 90 minute CD-R's. ( in a LiteON burner )

I prefer to make SVCD's, you can adjust the bitrate in DVDX to fill the
CD-r according to the length of the film to fit on the 2 CD's..

I then run the mpg files through Tmpgenc Simple Multiplex VBR, ( I did this because my new player, a Vtrek got the audio out of sync ) my files start at 930 mb ( set in DVDX ) and are reduced to just under 90 minutes by Tmpgenc, which are then burnt with Nero.

You can do the same with VCD's providing your DVD player handles the variation in bitrate

DVDX is a great program once you work out how to use it!.
I set it up and rip to the HD, then set DVDX to switch off the computer
when it has finished, usually during the night.
