  1. Thanks to everyone for the wealth of advice on these forums. Having benefitted from it all and set myself up with a DVD capturin/writing/playing system I hope it will help some if I share my experience
I recently bought a Ricoh MP5125A-DP DVD+RW writer which has so far worked very well. UK£200 from Dixons/pcworld.
I have captured a lot of old 8mm and Hi8 video using Dazzle DVC2 (if anyone has trouble with "A device attached to the system is not functioning" let me know) and edited it with Dazzle Moviestar.
I have now used the software supplied with the Ricoh i.e. NeoDVD to burn this to DVD+RW in DVD+VR mode. NeoDVD is handy for adding chapter points very easily. The menu screens are a bit clunky, but it works, and the video output from the Pioneer DV350S is perfect.
NeoDVD has crashed a couple of times - not sure why at this stage - possiblylow disc space.
I read that the Sony 305 does not read DVD+VR - the Pioneer does.
I have also burned video with DVDIt but LE2.5 does not allow insertion of chapter points. The menu screens are rather better, though.
I also burned SVCD (converted from mpeg2 with Winproducer) using Nero which looks remarkably good on the Pioneer although the sound is less good - artefacts over music.
Basically I would recommend the Pioneer for anyone using DVD+RW - it has read everything perfectly so far (Ricoh and Verbatim DVD+RW).
    Hope this helps someone, Chris

    Yeah, and the irony is:
All newer Pioneer DVD standalones playing +R/W like a charm, even they don't support it official and will never be...you know why.
