Hi:
Has anyone here used Nero's MPEG-2/DVD Encoder for NeroVision Express? Is it better than TMPGEnc? It's $24.00 so I'd rather find out from other people before making the jump. I've had my Sony DRU-500A for a couple of weeks and there's tons of software out there. I've used Nero to burn CDs but not DVDs. Just covering all the bases. Thanks.

I used the demo and it's good. But it really should only be used to make the BIN/CUE and your menus. I would not use NERO to convert the video. It is way too slow and buggy. AS far as how well it makes the menus...it does a pretty damn good job of it! It makes pretty profesional looking chapter selections. It let's you pick a background picture, it makes a thumbnail of the first frame of each chapter, lets you rename the chapter names so they appear under the thumbnail... it's pretty good looking.
The only thing I don't like is when the movie is playing, if you skip to the next chapter it goes to the menu's chapter selection and makes you choose the chapter from there. It needs to just skip ahead as many times as you press the skip button.
All in all its good. -

Ooops...I didn't notice there was a thread with 62 posts on this very subject. Turns out I have to buy the encoder in order to burn DVD. I guess I'll be uninstalling NeroVision. Too bad you can't import an MPEG-2 file encoded elsewhere...

The encoder works great but:
On the Nero web page it says about the MPEG 2/DVD encoder -
"Bitrate: from 32 kbits/sec to 384 kbits/sec (384 kbits/sec default)"
Where do I change the bitrate to something else than the default 384 kb/s ??

If you are using Studio DV - don't waste your money. I think I did. Many editing programs offer much more in the way of customising (like menu's, bitrate, etc) the final product than NeroVision. I believe Ahead is trying to get a foot in the door, but NeroVision still has a long way to go before it beats Premiere/Impression, Studio, DVDit, whatever.
