Blocky playback with Xvid files

I have several .avi movies compressed which use the xvid compression codec. Despite having the xvid codec installed i get blocky and sometimes completely wiped out video, whether using WMPlayer, PowerDVD or TMpegenc etc. I have no interest in the encoding of stuff using xvid, I am purely interested in playing back xvid files. Can anyone suggest a solution.
My PC is 700Mhz Athlon, 512Mb, Geforce 32MbDDR...is this the problem?
