  1. i've got a sampo dvd player right now, which claims to play svcds, but wont play any of the ones i've ever made on my mac in toast (they'll play on my boyfriend's dvd player tho.. so the problem isnt on my end ). it has frusterated me to the point where i was thinking about selling it if i could find a new player cheap enough....

bestbuy.com sems to have a good deal going on for cyber home dvd players. does anyone happen to have one of those or know if that brand can play svcd's burned in toast? i thought i'd ask before i ventured all the way to the nearest best buy, which is about 45 minutes away.

    thanks!

  2. I think APEX is a good cheap brand that plays almost anything. Most players can be made region/macro free. Although, many of the newer players don't have VCD support because of licensing fees (but they still have support for (x)svcd, cvd, etc). I bought the Mintek 1600 from Best Buy for $54. It's for my sister for Christmas so I haven't got to mess with it yet but the reports on this site claim that it plays most anything.

look over at the nerd-out.com messages boards in the cyberhome forum for more info and the dvdtalk.com/forum internation message board too. but i have it i've played 4-5 svcd's and not had any problems, but some people claim they get jerky video with svcd's. i haven't though. i'm making mine on a mac with either mediapipe or ffmpegx and they look great. this player plays vcd's too, dvd-r and dvd-rw. region hack is easy and it converts anamorphic pal great. for the money i'd get this guy in a sec, if you want to play non-region 1 dvd's and 16:9 pal. so it is converted correctly on your ntsc tv.

  4. I own a Cyberhome 528 DVD player and it plays just about anything you put into it, although the picture quality isn't the best. I don't have a MAC so can't say if it would play MAC authored discs, but I don't see why not. However, the Cyberhome doesn't like VCD's encoded with TMPGenc, you have to use the Panasonic encoder. It does play high bitrate TMPGenc encoded SVCDs/CVDs fine though. The Cyberhome is a German machine, I think the Apex is American, so (unless you are in America) you are probably better getting a European player. It's also good when a DVD player has it's own hack site on the internet! Try www.cyberhome-help.de

  5. thank you guys! i really appreciate your input. i took an svcd i made on my mac down to best buy anyway last night, and although i wasnt allowed to hook it up to a tv monitor to test quality, the DVD player did recognise it as an svcd and played it. i am so excited about this, as long as the price doesnt go up i'm definitely buying this model after the new year when i get paid
