tmpeg encoder vrs cine craft

just done star wars attotc onto dvd-r originally using cine craft encoder 2.5 using 3 pass vbr then just out of curiosity i tryed tmpeg encoder with 2 pass vbr and to be honest there is practically no noticable difference.and considering how much easier tmpeg encoder is to use i certainly think i'll be sticking with it anyone else feel the same?

cce is faster and the results are definitely better in my opinion

Yeah, Tmpeg is much slower but MUCH cheaper, CCE is a more professional choice with a small increase in quality, much faster, but MUCH more expensive!

I think CCE is easier to use than TMPG as there are far less options to worry about!

A good middle ground choice is the latest Mainconcept encoder for $149. It can be as fast as CCE and the quality IMHO is hardly discernable to both TMPG and CCE.

....as said above. Dont' forget to add that CCE crashes a lot. Hard to get things set up just right so it works on a W2K or XP system (yes, older verisons of tMPEGenc had the same problem). I also agree about MainConcept. In my hands it's even faster than CCE and single pass against single pass it gives smaller files and better results than CCE or tMPEGenc. They are saying they'll probably have multipass available in January. I might switch for just about everything then if they do as good a job with that as they have with everything else.

I've been lucky and have never had a crash with CCE versions 2.50, 2.64 or 2.66 using XP. The only time I did get crashes was when I first started using v2.50 and I wasn't aware of the 2GB input file limit, so I then learned about frameserving.

I've only used the Mainconcept encoder as part of Premiere 6.5 and with the latest update I am very, very impressed with the quality with speed. I'm thinking of buying the full version and like you I will probably start using it for everything.

Good point on the 2 gig! Actually, I'd forgotten about that. I only use the 2.5 with frameserving. Newer versions seem a bit more stable, but still get lock-ups, etc. I think it's due to CCE not handling bad frames very well. Fortunately, I don't get them very often so CCE works. I do still find myself going back to tMPEGend a lot. Especially when time doesn't matter (I have a computer dedicated to encoding), and I don't feel like worrying about it.

Bottom line is I use all three depending on what I'm doing and I get good results with all three. There isn't a perfect solution yet as far as I can see.
