  1. Hi everyone,

I followed the steps here to copy my old tapes to VCDs by using VirtualDub PICvideo then TMPGEnc to MPG files. I captured using 352x288 format.

I then burn using Nero onto my CDs. The strange thing is that I can't play the VCDs on my pc at all using XingMpeg or Windows Media player.

Then the weird thing is that my Samsung DVD player played it without a hitch?! I thought its usually the other way round. I can view the files on the CD fine in Windows Explorer and that was no error encountered in the whole process.

Can anyone tell me what might went wrong?

    Thank you.

Do the pre-burn mpeg files play on your PC?
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

Read the cd directories and see what filename is assigned to the mpg on the cd.

If its .dat copy it to your pc and rename it to mpg. Now try to play it.

  5. I can do that? That brings me to another question. Are the DAT files just MPG files renamed?

Why is it that the time/filesize shown in Nero is NOT the same for the DAT and MPG if they are supposed to be the same?

Sorry, am really curious on the problem.

What if I can or cannot play the renamed files?

    Thank you gll99!

  6. When you create a VCD, the .MPG files are renamed as .DAT. This is a standard feature and is quite correct. I have the same problem about playing a VCD on my PC (created with Nero). With the Windows Media Player, I can play the individual DAT file (just open them using File --> Open command). But that is very annoying. One, it does not play continuously. I must select the next file manually. Second, I cannot see the menus that I created. However, my PC can play the commercial VCDs properly. I will try to compare the file and directory structure when I have some free time. I will post my reply, if I find something out.

  7. Ok. I finally got home to try it out.

I can't copy the DAT files in Windows. I got an error that says Error copying ..DAT: Invalid MS-DOS function.

Does that means my files are corrupted?

    Thanks!

  8. Hi Pazu!

I've got the same problem like you:
"I can't copy the DAT files in Windows. I got an error that says Error copying ..DAT: Invalid MS-DOS function."
And I can't see the vcds on my pc, too.

"Does that means my files are corrupted?" --> No, the files are ok and can be played on other PCs.

But I haven't got a solution for this problem

I would be happy, if anyone could help us!

  9. Hi,

I have found out that lotsa people had this problem by searching the forum. Its been around and seems like no one has a solution.

Could the problem be with Nero? Could it be that the VCD is coded to be played only on standalones but not on PCs?

Can someone who is actually running Win2K and using Nero to burn his disc verify that it actually works?

  10. Hi was reading this thread and thought I would reply as I am running Win2k Pro and when I try to copy a dat file to hdd I get the same error.

The file plays fine in windows media player and also when I copy the disc using disc to disc copy it plays great in my stand alone dvd player. I have no idea why I get this error and in actual fact I will have to try out a few of my discs to see if its confined to one or two or if any time I try to copy dat files I get the same error

  11. Hi!

I have the exact same problem, infact I made a post earlier today with the headline "VCD playbackproblem via PC".

I'm also getting the same error message when trying to copy the .dat files to my HD. I cannot open the VCD via Windows mediaplayer nor PowerDVD. BUT, I can open 11 of 17 of the .dat files via WinDVD, THAT'S ODD! (why not all 17 of them? I know the 6 other files aren't corrupted since I burnt a second CD and rearranged the files in a different order and files placed at place 9-14 is nonplayable at both of the CDs).

I'm too using Nero and Win2k with HP9310i burner, burned in 4x speed only.

Isn't there anyone out there with a solution to this problem??

  14. DOESN'T WORK! I tried QuickVCDplayer 3!

  15. Maybe try Ivcd and see if that works. I am running win 2k and burning with nero, and if I can not watch it with one the other one usually works. But, there has been a few times when it has not worked, that is when I have made a menu with multiple video clips and I end up getting 2 or more menus. For some reason this does not want to play on my computer but will fire up in my stand alone.
