Hey Joe,
Can you give us a little more information?
What type of DVD writer?
Is it installed as the IDE master?
What other drives are present on your computer?
What Operating system?
You get the idea. The more you can tell us, the quicker we might be able to help.Just what is this reality thing anyway? -
hey thanks ok
i have windows xp
the dvd writer i have is NEC ND-1300A
hmm about this ide master stuff i dont really understand i think the master is a samsung
i have no other drives i replaced my old one with the new one it coms up on my comp "found new hardware" i go to click it then it comes up with the blue screen saying to restart because i dont have enough space or its to do with my bios

Did you have two CD drives and replace one of them with the DVD?
Or did you have just one CD and replace it?Just what is this reality thing anyway? -
i just had one and replaced it with the new one

OK,
Try the NEC website and see if you can find instructions for setting the jumpers. You need to make sure they are set correctly first. Since it is a DVD writer, it needs to be the master.
I am not familiar with this device, but there should be some info on the NEC site about it.
Also, if you will write down all the info on your blue screen and go to Microsoft's website, you will be able to find out more about the failure and its possible causes. or you can google the error code.
Good luck. Thes two suggestions are at the limit of my knowledge on the subject. If neither of these suggestions work, then perhaps someone else here can help you.Just what is this reality thing anyway? -

You know, I've never questioned that either. Everyone says it is so, even my drive documentation.
I THINK that if an IDE device is the only device on the channel, it must be a master.
Maybe that is where this comes from.Just what is this reality thing anyway?
