I just bought a HP dvd1040i to replace my older and slower drive, but for some reason I am having trouble backing up dvd's with it. I am using the newest version of dvdfab decrypter and dvdshrink. When dvdshrink gets to the burn stage, it burns until it gets to about 2-3% (just enough to ruin the disk) and then gives me a long error message (below). I am burning on Memorex dvd+r's, and I have already tried reducing the write speed to 12x (drive will burn dvd+r's at 20x, disk's max speed is 16x) to no avail. The drive reads and writes cd-r's and reads dvd's just fine, but when it comes to writing dvd's it just doesn't work. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Remove your NERO SERIAL NUMBER from your NERO log that you posted.

Use better quality dvd media like VERBATIM. MEMOREX is considered crappy dvd media.
When using DVD SHRINK disable the feature that allows using NERO to burn automatically. Instead use IMGBURN to burn your dvd media.

I doubt your new dvd writer is causing the failed burns since you're using crappy MEMOREX dvd media.

Thanks, it worked! BTW, are Sony DVD+R's considered crap too? I have a spindle of 100 of them for when I run out of Memorex...

What worked for you? Using SONY DVD+R media or using IMGBURN to burn after using DVD SHRINK?

In my experience w/SONY DVD media it can be hit or miss since they now manufacture their own dvd media. I've had some discs in a spindle of 50 & 100 spindles only be able to burn at 4x speed. When SONY used to have TAIYO YUDEN manufacture their dvd media it was great with no problems at all. But now they manufacture their own dvd media and it's not the greatest. I'm sure others will post they've had no problems with it. VERBATIM & TAIYO YUDEN are good quality dvd media to use. That's the only brands I'll use for backing up my dvd movie collection.

I just used ImgBurn after encoding with DvdShrink. I'm not sure why it worked, as the DvdShrink/Nero combination always worked with my other drive, but it did. I still used the Memorex disks, but it still only works at 12x; 16x still seems to ruin disks. The Sony disks are unopened, so I will probably exchange them for some better quality media. Thanks again!

  6. It worked because your new drive is too new for the old programs to have the drivers for it, could be the same about your media.

There's no need for any new drivers when using a new dvd burner. I've never had a problem when using a new dvd burner. I have over 20 dvd burners which never had a problem after installing into any pc. NERO software is and has been buggy to begin with which is why I suggested using IMGBURN.
