  1. I recently bought the boxed set of the television show 24 (if you haven't seen it you should rent/buy it because it is really addicting!!!) and I wanted to convert the whole season to DVD-R because I want to keep a copy on my boat (LEGAL!!!).

There are 6 discs and each disc has 4 episodes that are each around 1.75 gigs each so I just want to downgrade them to about 1 gig an episode so I can keep the same episodes on the same discs.

Here is my problem... I use mediapipe and use the MPEG encoder to reencode the video but the output runs too fast. These are the steps I use in mediapipe :

    File Browser
    File Streamer
    MPEG Decoder
    Color Conversion
    MPEG Encoder:
    --Stream Type: DVD
    --Frame Rate : NTSC Video
    --Aspect Ratio : 16:9
    --BitRate : USER (3100)
    --Interlace Mode : Progressive
    --H/Quality Filter : OFF
    --USE VBR

Then it will encode just fine but the output always runs too fast so that it is out of sync with the audio. I have also tried to use the 3:2 pulldown (no clue why) and it made the video too slow. I tried to use the Frame rate NTSC Film and that made the video a bit slower.

I am running out of time until I go to my boat and I want to get this done!!!

Also, i have tried to use a program called Telecine for OS9 because i read somewhere that that would work and it didn't even load. Please help me stay in OSX (10.2.2) and get this video working properly. And if possible keep me using mediapipe because that is the only program that seems to work for me right now (afropic, ffmpeg, etc I have problems with).

    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!

i always found this method the best for downsampling DVD's right now (although you should let me know what problems you are having with afropic, cuz 0.3.1 is my most solid release thus far) i hope you read the read me about needing the quicktime mpeg-2 decoder. keep in mind if you want to keep the episodes on the same disc as soon as you start downsampling video or changing the original layout you can NOT use the old video layout with menus and what not, you have to recompile them together usin dvd studio pro (if you want to make new menus) or sizzle (i dont like it yet cuz of no ac3 audio support, even though dvd author - the program it is based on - supports ac3, the author of sizzle has not yet added those capabilities yet)

anyways if you want to do this process i'm about to list you need dvd studio pro with mpeg-2 encoder (most specifically the mpeg-2 encoder for quicktime is needed) and the mpeg-2 decoder (30$ from apple).

go to my webpage and look at Process #3(2) in the os 10 dvd downsampling tutorial section. that process will ALWAYS work.. especially if your files are under 4 gigs in size (which they are) ignore the part about copying the mplex binary because the newest missingmpegtools has it i think.

if you need any help with this let me know (it may look intimidating at first but it works flawlessly)

  3. Here is the terminal output for AfroPic 0.3.1 when it comes to me importing an m2v stream and an ac3 stream... and I have the MPEG2 component but I dont know if it is in the right place (it is in System>Library>Quicktime) :

that is because you didn't run the mpeg2enc installer included-- the error you are getting is based on the fact that mpeg2enc isnt installed, if you don't run that installer, you won't get it working-- if you are using the latest installer do NOT use the option of CVS install UNLESS you choose compile cvs FIRST... and if you don't have the developer tools then just choose internet install. you will need the root accont enabled to get the mpeg2enc installer to work.

  5. Okay, I am in the middle of an encode and it appears to be working. As far as installing the MPEG2ENC I previously did that but I only clicked the 'install' button.

I do have the dev tools but I didn't install the 'internet' option. I think that you should make it clear which installer to use depending on each circumstance because I don't think it says anywhere what any of the mpeg2enc options mean.

Thank you and good luck with AfroPic, I can't wait until it has reached 1.0!

ps. Might I recommend an icon change?
pps. Hopefully I won't need to ask you for help anymore!

i just added (who knows why it took me this long) the capability of afropic to check for mpeg2enc AND quicktime mpeg-2 decoder before running to make sure these kind of problems will stop occuring, i will be updating it extensively over my break, im just really busy with classes right now so i miss alot of things here and there.
