Can't play VCD of JPG's Using Windows Media Player or I-VCD

Hello all:

What I am trying to do: Create a CD album of still pictures (JPG) that I can play in my DVD player as well as on my PC's CD player.

What is the problem: Can't created VCD on my PC. My DVD player (Panasonic A-120) supports only 1 particular kind of CD-RW media which I don't have, I am waiting to succeed with PC first

What I am using: Nero Burner 5.5 (I created the VCD following the steps listed on this website for Nero, creating VCD of JPG files) on Windows 98 (SE).

Details of the problem

1. I click on the .DAT file under MPEGAV directory using WMP 7.01 which says "No combination of filters". On this website I see that Windows Media Player should play the .DAT file but the list of supported files on microsoft site does not include .DAT. Assuming info on this website is ok??

2. ION-VCD says "Erros has been occurred".

What I have tried:

1. Verified that the registry entry is correct per microsoft's KB.
2. Searched the forums and tried all available suggestions but ...... sigh!
3. Installed ASPI drivers also.
4. Installed NIMO LITEPACK 1.0 AFTER WMP 7.
5. ION VCD Player. See msg above.
6. QUICK VCD Player. Same msg as WMP.

Pls help. Surely this cant be that difficult. What am I doing wrong??

You can click on the dat file, and windows will ask you to pick a program. Scroll down the list and pick media player.

If you still have problem, you want to get standard VCD, and isolate the problem is :

1) HW or SW, 2) Windows or Media player.

Thank you Sing Sing, the idea to try a commercial VCD was a good one!

It works! The commercial VCD has written on it "Universal VCD" and also "DVD Version". I do not have DVD player on PC but it is playing fine.

So the problem is related to burning I assume.

Are you aware of any other freeware tools that woulds allow me to achieve the same goal - create a VCD for sharing with family and friends to view on PC as well as DVD/CD players?

And by the way, I have the same problem on 2 other PC's, so it is the media or the CD creation that us the problem.

Pick a CDR that you want to use, and use Nero to make a disc copy. If this CDR play then it is compatible to your equipement.

Here is the scoop:

1. Commercial VCD plays fine.
2. Copy of commercial VCD plays fine.
Copy made by NERO
Copy made by Roxio
3. Tried CD-R as well as CD-RW's. Same results.

So looks like something wrong with Create VCD in Nero. Am I missing some DLL's, Codes, or whatever?

Roxio and Nero used to have problem to co-exist on windows 98.
If you are on windows 2000, then you should be better off.
But this is still your most likely problem.

Nero is a better product. It is bundled by most burner. Try this :

1. Uninstall Roxio, and said "yes" to uninstall everythings.
2. Re-install Nero ( which version ? ).
3. Re-boot.
4. ( Click the link below ) use this procedure to burn 2 or 3 pictures, on a CDR/W as slid show VCD.

5. Play the disc ( and cross your fingure).

I ended up doing the following which has worked fine for me:

1. Installed VCD Easy.
2. Converted stills from JPG to MPEG format using VCD Easy.
3. Burnt VCD using the created MPEG stills.
4. Installed WinDVD to play the created VCD - this is necessary because the VCD with MPEG would only be created using PBC - which is not supported by WMP.

I followed the VCDEasy guide that comes with the software. While it is not as slick as Nero or Roxio, it is much more flexible and does the job cleanly.

There are more Digital cameras that we (in US) bought than DVD players. Most of us want to send these jpeg pictures to friends.

I only have used Nero for vcd slid show task, but I would like to know about how other tool do the task. So, I am better informed.

There are a lot of subjective judgement calls on "what is good, and what is bad" on open forum like this. A handful of quick guide is a good ways for memebers to decide and get a tool to get things done.

Ok, SingSing, I hear you. To create a VCD with stills that orignated from a Digital Camera using VCDEasy is a 2 step process.

1. Create MPEG Stills

Why: Digital cameras typically generate JPG images. These need to be converted to MPEG Stills.

How: Tools/MPEG Stills/Folders (or specific Files)/Generate

Details: Choose Tools from left, click on MPEG Stills tab on top. Select specific input files or entire folders (choose include sub-folders if you have pics in sub-folders as well). Select an output folders if you'd like it to be different from input folder. Choose other options like quality/size, VCD/SVCD, TV Systems (PAL/NTSC), Aspect Ratio, Resize Filter, etc. for optimal viewing. I left them all on default for first time. Click on Generate.

2. Burn CD

How: (S)VCD/Main/Add Files/Go

Details: Choose (S)VCD from left, click on Main tab on top. Select MPEG files. Choose other options like time to wait between segments, interactivity, etc. under Options and Interactivity tabs. I left them all on default for first time. Click on Go.

Only "problem" I faced is that I had not configured VCDEasy's interface with CDRDAO because I had never used VCDEasy before. To do this, Choose Settings from left, and used Force Driver, Generic-MMC. That worked the first time.

My other "complaint" is that you have to use PBC for some reason with MPEG Stills which means you have to use a PBC enabled VCD Player. I downloaded WinDVD, which worked fine. I'd like to know if others are aware of any freeware tools for this.

Did you managed to make a slide-show with SVCD, with jpeg ?
If the answer is yes, then you are ahead of me.

The Nero budle with CD bruner are the basis one. It could not make SVCD due to lack of built in mpeg2 encoder ( unless you pay and buy the more expensive version ).
