I'm now convertion Avi to Svcd, but how long will this take (on a Pentium4, 2 Gherz, 526 Ram). I'm now looking at a Dos-screen, were I see a lot of "Not scaled properly". What the heck does that mean?

Don't you mean how long is a piece of string?
Really it depends on so many things. You gave your PC specs which is a good start but encoding time also depends on length of movie, encoder used, settings or filters applied etc, etc. Can't really help you without more info.
FYI, using Tmpgenc on a 2.2Ghz P4 with 512Mb ram and divx source. I encode a 2 hour movie to DVD format using 2-pass VBR and High quality but no extra filters in approx 12 hours. SVCD encodes would be about half that. -

I would have thought a P4 would have been much faster than that -

It was VBR 1 pass...
mind you it was just a test, but mostly if I was going to go from divx to DVD, then VBR 1 pass is enough...Divx is lossy to begin with and you're not going to notice any difference from the original Divx at DVD bitrates. My min and max in CCE are always 0k and 9800k
