i like divx, imo it gives better quality than mpeg at smaller file sizes. unfortunately i'm stuck with mpeg for playback on my dvd player. i saw the Kiss DP-450 player which supports divx(mp4) but it's not cheap and seems to be very restricted in its compatibility. so what about an xbox?
i can get an xbox for cheaper than a Kiss DP-450 and it also (and understandably so) seems to have less compatibility issues. not to mention the fact that i would also get a decent enough games console.
it would be great to be able to watch divx movies on my tv (without using a tv-out), it would enable (imo) far greater quality at similar sizes and would also save me a lot of hassle in terms of encoding to mpeg (for downloaded files).
my question: has anybody here got any experience with divx on xbox? what's the quality like? does it play back in proper full screen? and what specs does it support?

the xbox is a 700 mhtz computer with an 8 gigabyte harddrive it will play them the same way any other computer does
-
that's really not very helpful (whether you have seen it or not).
opinions from people who have seen it are what i want. -
Ive heard that the Xbox will play Divx movies after some modifications. In other words, it wont play vcds, svcds, divx, etc.. without a mod chip installed. I read that the chip was needed to bypass Microsoft's lock that prevents installation of outside software onto the hard drive. So basically you are going to need to do some research into both the chip and the software.. I am sure both are out there somewhere, but probably harder to find since MS put the legal smack down on the big supplier.. http://www.lik-sang.com

it is very helpful if you know anything about computers. Put the dixv on your xbox harddrive and play it.
Now how to do that YOU need to go to an xbox forum and not a vcd forum -
i have looked into stuff - mod chip and that.
just to say the xbox is like any pc isn't that helpful. different pc's do play them back differently, depending on hardware and software. for example the player used for xbox divx plaback - what's that like?
i'm posting in the dvd players forum on vcdhelp.com, mainly because the xbox is a dvd player. so to post in a dvd player forum makes sense, right? -
man you still don't get it do you? You can run windows on xbox you can run linux on xbox. any divx player you can run on a computer you can run on the xbox. I gave you the hardware config of an xbox, what software you use is up to you. you can also run dreamcast, nintendo supernintendo and playstation, sega genesis, commodore 64,atari jaguar, you can change you harddrive to 20 gigabytes, as far as divx you can play divx 2,3,4,5/xvid/mp3/mp2/mpg1/mpg2/ogg/ogm/jpg
- FF/RW
- pause
- picture viewer with slideshows
- subtitle timeshifting
- XNS support (relax)
- IR remote support
- clipping / scaling / aspect ration control
- support for international subtitles

The picture quality is limited by your TV set not your xbox -
i don't want to have to install windows or linux though. that's my point. when you have to load an os, to me it defies the point of having a stand alone player because it's too much like a normal pc.
so if i don't want to install an os i'm a bit more limited in terms of player (and different players do give different playback), in fact i think there's 3 (?).
and so i have no idea what it will playback like on these.
i know how to get divx playback on xbox, i was just wondering what playback was like on the xbox with the available players (as in homebrew, not windows stuff).
i think you're last post (secretagent) was a little more helpful, but are you talking about playing divx from within an os (as in linux or windows) on xbox or not? -
yes, I believe he means using a software Divx player on the Xbox just like you would for a normal PC... so YES with an OS. Basically to my understanding there is NO WAY TO PLAY DIVX MOVIES WITH THE XBOX AS IS... you have to have an OS to run the player.
-
that's my whole point! you don't need an os in the form of linux or windows or whatever to play divx movies! that's what i'm trying to say. as long as you have a modded xbox (which i think you need to install an os anyway), you can watch practically any type of media file with the likes of the xbox media player. the likes of this player do not require an additional os within the xbox to run! so basically - you don't need an os to play divx movies on the xbox.
what i'm trying to find out (and have been since the start of this thread) is what the quality of playback is like on these homebrew players, not on any media players from windows!!! forget windows and any other os, and re-read my question.
