I have heard rumors that Microsludge will provide support in the future on the XBox 360 for XVID and DIVX. Can anyone confirm this? Currently there are software kludges that run on the server PC that transcode to WMV while streaming an XVID or DIVX file. That basically stinks. All that does is downgrade the video quality and then call it a good thing! Their web site gives no clue. On their FAQ page they give a one word answer when asked if they support DIVX - "No". http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/digitalmedia/videoplaybackfaq.htm As long as they persist in pushing their garbage WMV video format while ignoring other better ones, they can keep their XBox! If it weren't for this, an Xbox 360 would make a decent way to stream video to a TV from a PC.

You'd be surprised at the quality the xbox360 plays divx\xvids when transcoding from a server PC. My friend's PC is an old Packard Bell P4 2.4ghz\1gb ram\250gb Budget IDE drive with XP Media Centre installed and is streaming to xbox360 via a D-link 54mbps wireless router & xbox wireless receiver - when choosing an avi (using remote control) on the xbox's media centre and choosing "transcode" it takes just a few seconds to buffer & begin playing....and the quality through his 16:9 panasonic TV is very good - considerably better than it does from the video card’s (7600gs AGP) tv-out using an s-video cable, allot smoother.

On the other hand there is now a version of the excellent video player\broadcaster "VLC" called "VLC360" which looks very promising indeed.
