  1. After hours of perusing and searching the forums here and elsewhere. I still need a little assistance before purchasing this expensive card.

I saw that this card does NOT include a Firewire port.

Will I be able to capture my old VHS family videos into this card, and then
convert them to VCD/SVCD and burn them onto CD-R, and view them on a DVD player?(my DVD player plays CD-R's)

What type of software will allow me to add effects to them such as the "Pop-Up Video" style comments?

Im a gamer also so I will benefit from the video card portion too, which is why I'm convincing wifey that this is the "one we need"

    Thanks for any assistance

Yes, firewire is for transferring video from a DV camcorder, and if you want to do this in the future the cards are very cheap, £20 (your DVD player also needs to be VCD/SVCD compatible

Not quite sure what you mean by this, but the card does come bundled with video editing software. ATI used to use Ulead software, but they have switched to Pinnacle

  3. Hi Craig,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I dont think the AIW 9700 Pro has a firewire port this time. Thats why I was wondering if I'd still be able to capture old analog VHS.

What I meant by "Pop-Up Video" style is, VH1 had a program a while back that would show music videos but they had added a little bubble that would pop up on the screen and comment on the video. i.e "Cheesy Prop Alert" and an arrow would point at the prop.
This would be fun to do for old family videos.

And I've been hanging by a thread to my Voodoo5 5500AGP for WAY too long, so needless to say, Im excited

  4. Do remember that ATI cards are very strong on Macrovision Recognition. So you might need some kind of external macrovision disabler to capture from VHS that is Macrovision protected.
