sorry....no such thing as a recordable 2 layer disk....otherwise there would be no market for DVD splitting software. We would all just backup and burn....

On the other hand, there are double sided disks...but they are like having two 4.7G dvd-r's back-to-back (i.e., to the burner and software they look like a regular 4.7G disk)

Dual layer DVD-r.....hopefully one day... 8)

  3. Or just wait for BluRay to be released to the market in a handful of years.

BluRay in prototype stage right now holds 30GB per layer. And if you calculate per side and and per layer..........it's a huge disc.

By the time of the market they play to release single layer single sided discs @ 60GB in capacity.

Thanks guys......didnt know if that was a daft question or not. Just assumed that you'd be able to get Dual layered DVD-R's.Oh well.
So it would be possible then to split a movie over a double sided DVD-R and just use it as a "flipper" disk ?

Yes, although I think this is more trouble than its worth. You still have to get up anyway to turn the disc over so you may as well use a second disc. The problem with double sided discs is you can't label them easily.

For people with multi-disc dvd players, double sided is just plain silly. I remember when I bought my Apex 703, people laughed at me for getting a multi-disc dvd player, but now with movies like LOtR extended and dual to single layer splits...I'm the one laughing.

  7. I heard that Blue laser is goign to come out sooner than we think. It is going to be a cool technology. Just think how much it can store. I have heard that 4x and 8x (coming out) really goign to reach the end of the recent dye technology cause of the heat and the wave. Don't know what is goign to be after 8x. And cannot think how fast exactly Dual Layer drive gogin to have?

Heh just use CD "HUB" labels I love those things... they are so small its almost impossible to unbalance a disk with them also.

But personally its easier to lose everthing else and make a disk that contains JUST the movie and fits on one site.

    23GB to 27GB per layer.

Here is a good article in plain English explaining what Blu-ray Disc is about.

There will never be any dual layer DVDR, it is impossible for the laser
to burn to the second layer without messing up the first layer.

Dual layer DVD are not burned but pressed.
