  1. I have a few shows on my PC captured to MPEG2 before I bought the HS2, and I also use the PC as a back-up in case I forget to program the HS2 (saved me twice so far). I have a PC with DVD-R/RAM burner as well as a DMR-HS2 DVD recorder that burns DVD-R/RAMs. So, does anyone have any ideas on this:

I'd like to convert backwards compared to what most folks wish to do with my DMR-HS2's video recorder VRO files. I'd like to convert from MPEG2 format on my PC to the DMR-HS2 unit for quicker editing and final dubbing over to DVD-R discs for archival. I'm not interested in fancy menus that the PC can do for me compared to the HS2.

I'd also like to view the videos on stand-alone DVD-Video players, so simply keeping HS2 or PC recordings on DVD-RAM discs is not what I wish to do. Not to mention that RAM discs are 6 times more expensive than the DVD-R's that I use (92 cents each after shipping for Lead Data in 50-disc spindles at dvdroutlet.com).

Ideally, I'd like to burn a DVD-RAM disc on the PC and insert it into the HS2 for file transfer since the DMR-HS2's editing of a one-hour show only takes about 3 minutes worth of work. Then dubbing over to a DVD-R is in real time at about 41 or 42 minutes for most hour long shows. This is compared to several hours on the PC if I segment it;demux;reencode to filter out video noise;remux;then burn to DVD-R.

Any helpful ideas on PC software that can convert from MPEG2 or VOB files to the HS2's VRO format? Or is there a way to export the files into the HS2 unit via its firewire port in DV format? I've read that it only connects and recoginizes DV camcorders rather than PCs. I assume that this is a "host" versus "client" protocol limitation (PC is a "host" versus the camcorder is a "client")? Thanks!

  2. What happens if you just burn a normal mpeg-2 file to dvd-ram on the pc and insert it in the dmr-hs2? How about if you just change the extension from mpg to vro or vob? Does the dmr-hs2 read the dvd-ram disk and allow copying from it?
If this doesn't work check out http://www.softarch.com/ they have a package called "writedvd pro" that I think lets you read/write/convert vro files on the pc. Try emailing them with your question.
Also check the dvd section of the avsforums. They have a lot of dmr-hs2 owners there.

Hi JHerbert- I've already tried various ways of getting the HS2 unit to recognize Mpegs without success including as-is or changing its extension to .vro or .vob. It does not reconginze any contents on the disc.

I've looked through all HS2 related posts at avsforum I could find using the search function, but they all have been working in the opposite direction (VRO on HS2 to VOB or MPEG on PC). No one has yet responded with an answer after one day of posting the same question there.

I've sent off a question to the company you mentioned above about their software, so I'll post their response here. Thanks!
