I just recently upgraded from Windows 98 SE, to Windows 2000. The entire reason for the upgrade (And I paid $200!): I wanted to capture complete movies from TV in a single MPG file, without them being split up at 4GB due to FAT32 4GB file size limitations..
Anyways, now when I capture AVI files in Virtual Dub I can get like 12GB avi files.. No problems there. But when I try to capture TV programs using WinDVR, even though I have the file split size set to 20GB, it still makes 4GB segments?? It won't create an MPG larger than 4GB. What's going on?
Is this a problem with my software, with MPG files, or what? If it's a software problem, what other PVR application exists that can capture high quality (DVD quality) mpeg files at any size, including over 4GB?

Sounds like a software problem. If virtualdub can make 12 gig files its not ur PC. Try changing the settings in the program

Thx for the advice. There is only one setting in the program, it's 'File Split Size'. I have set it to 12GB, 20GB, 99GB, etc.. None of these settings make any difference.. So I ask:
Has anyone been able to get WinDVR versions 1.8+ to record an MPG file greater than 4GB?? If so, what version & how..
OR
Has anyone used any other good quality PVR software that can record an MPG file size beyond 4GB, up to 20GB?
Thx! -
I record MPEG-2 files way above 4GB all the time with ATI MMC.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
I say check your software program good. I had the same problem in mediastudio till I found a setting in the program where it automatically cut the files into 4gb segments. A lot of programs have this for non ntfs operating systems.

ATI MMC is only for ATI video cards, right? I don't think that will run with my system.
What high quality, PVR apps are out there in the retail market that work on all cards, through WDM drivers? And can do more than 4 GB files?
As for settings: Thx again! But there is only the 1 setting - 'File Split Size'. I have been through the software 1000 times, and that's the only one. If I set it to 1MB it will split at 1MB, 200MB splits at 200MB, etc.. But if I set it to like 8GB, 12GB, 20GB etc. it's giving me 4GB file segments.
I guess I'm just SOL with this software, and need to find something else? -
Are ALL the drives concerned formatted NTFS? Maybe a drive used by temp files is still FAT32? Is is possible that the drive you capture to is NTFS, but you left the drive that the capture prog or the temp files on as FAT32 (perhaps so you could dual-boot for games or something...)?

their's an off chance u may have to re-install the program.
I know sometimes when I make hard ware changes I have to re-install programs -
Have you tried setting the file splitting parameter to 0 (zero)?

Hi:
The setting can't be set to zero, as every time I try it reverts back to 10. I tested it at 10 and it does just that, make 10MB segments. I have also tried setting it to like 12GB in the registry itself, but when the program starts up it just reverts that # back to 4GB.
Every drive on the system is NTFS. I installed Windows 2000 fresh and formatted both drives to NTFS before anything was installed.
As for the re-install yeah, I installed it completely fresh to a new OS, after all other changes. So this is as good as it gets.
Anyways.. I am now 100% certain that WinDVR, at least up to version 1.8, is screwed. It will not make MPG files (Mpeg-2, Mpeg-1) greater than 4GB.. No matter what you set the file size at, they will always be 4GB segments. Pretty dumb I'd say. At least VDub can record AVI files now up to 12-20GB, and I've been using that for TV recordings instead with MJPeg.
Thx!
