  1. I am looking another DVD player to play movie in another room. My first was a Pioneer DV333, that cost $170 from B.B. The newer model from Pioneer has aspect ration issue with SVCD.

I saw the spec and review of JVC XV-S300BK. It look good, and also have tha same minor that DV333 has : you need to flick a switch between component and Svideo/RCA output. I also see quite a few problems about SVCD playback bitrate. Pioneer also has the same limit.

I do like the digest, storbe features, and the low cost of $100.

For those we already own one, will you recommened it ?

This is only the second DVD player I've had so I don't have much to compare it to.

Plays VCD and SVCD really well, provided you get the fps right - the UK version likes 25 fps but not 23.97fps.

Don't know about DVD+/- R/RW compatability, but I presume it can read all types of disk.

The only problem is that it doesn't show the time during VCD/SVCD playback, but then that's hardly a big issue.

On reflection, I think I would buy it again unless there was another player that was available which had more features.

I also purchased the JVC, it is a second unit (my first is a Sony 500D).

For burning I've got a HP200 and the JVC has no problem with the +R's and +RW's.

The JVC plays pretty much everything I put in it (wish I could say the same for the Sony) but won't play miniDVD's and won't play MP3's burned on DVD. Neither of those are really a problem and I understand that most units will not play either anyways...

  4. Would. (I actually have XV-S302, but only difference is case color) To correct one thing - it shows VCD/SVCD playing time, but ONLY, if playback is started from number buttons. Plays DVD-R/RW without big problems (some skips with cheap RW and up to unplayable with early cheap R). Todays cheapos play to the end. No problems with CD-R(W). Can't exceed SVCD bitrate (skips at peaks).

  5. So far, look like standard SVCD is working fine with this model.
I was worry a bit about quite a few members reviewed not able to play their disc, I kind of think this model behaves like pioneer : It does not work well above 2520 bit rate.
