Hello every since I upgraded to winxp I cant get vcd or svcd to play on my computer. I either get a msg telling me the format is unsupported or it will just hang at a black screen, I have tryed diffrent players includind windvd but none of them will work. I then did some looking around and found some info on a files called SCSI1HLP.VXD. I downloaded the files and loaed in to the dir /system32/iosubsys. Restarted and still nothing. The vcds play fine in my apex dvd player but for some reason nothing I do will get them to play on my computer. if any one has any sugestions plz let me know as I am at the end of my rope thanks. I have also tryed just copying the dat file. It copys over fine to the hard drive but will not play.

If this is a new Xp install, you need to install the codec's to play.
PowerDVD 4, has a codec for the playback of Mpeg 2, it can also be used with TMPGEnc.

You might need to install the "Nimo Codec Pack" available on this site.
Hope that helps!!!

i have the same problem im stupid can some1 give me step by step what to do to get my vcd to work

Easiest thing for newbie (avoiding codecs and ad-wares) is to get a copy of PowerDVD 4 XP and install it. After installation, just insert your (S)VCD into your CD(DVD)ROM(Writer) and it will autoplay. If it does not, right click on the player screen and select configuration/general/play automatically upon inserting disc.

i have power dvd i have had it for ages but this vcd dosent work on power dvd when all others i have do.
i know this vcd works though because i used it on a standallown player what should i do step by step -
If you have a VCD that doesn't play on PDVD 4 (I STRESS 4) when all others do then it is not burned to VCD standards. You said you had PDVD for ages, but only PDVD 4 supports (S)VCD playback off the disk without browsing. Select the folder icon, select the CD-ROM your disc is in and click the play button. If that doesn't work, click the folder icon, select Open Media Files and browse to the .dat file on the disc. If that doesn't work, then you'll have to copy to the .dat file to your HDD and play with any player (incl. WMP). If that doesn't work, then rename to .mpg. If that doesn't work, extract the .mpg file (depends on your codecs) from the .dat file using VCDGear from the tools section.

thanks ive tryed nearly all of them on the list with no sucsess.
the vcdgear converting to dat file to mpg says when i do it "unable to creat output file" and dosent convert it.
asa for copying it to hdd its a read only file on the disk and it wont copy it saying "could not copyfile cause of I/Q device error"
as for playing it in file mode off the cd on power dvd when i select the file and click ok and play power dvd crashs.
and ideas what im doing wrong?
out of intrest is it possible to play vcds on a ps2 ? i have one of them also ? -
update:
i have just realised i downloaded the wrong vcdgear lol ive downloaded the right one now.
unfortunatly it says "E:\MPEGAV\AVSEQ01.MPG could not be written"
and ideas ? -
it does.
unfortunatly media player dosent play this vcd it comes up with an error thing. -
Look like your XP install has problem or XP need a service pack.
I assume you can download media player for XP from mxxsxx.com, and try again. -
any1 got any surgestions on what i should do to get my film to work (i really want to watch it ) cause im going offline now for a bit il check in the morning to see.
plz help me to get this to work -
There should not be a problem copying the read-only file from the CD, the "i/o device error" indicates either a problem reading the disk or a problem with the CD drive. The copied file would be read-only but on the HD you can change the attribute under Properties.
The "cannot create E:\filename" error indicates you did not specify the HD as the output device, the program was attempting to write to the CD.
WinXP has MPEG1 codec built-in, media player should work with no modification or additional codecs needed, at least for VCD.
You may have more than one problem but the "I/O Device Error" is an absolute failure of either the disk itself or the drive, is it SCSI by any chance? If so, check for new drivers for your SCSI interface, if is IDE try changing DMA settings. -
Do you have the original mpeg1 or mpeg2(for svcd)? It's kinda weird because just recently none of my computers are also able to play any vcd's that I've imaged using Nero 5.9. I then tried to use VCDEasy to image the vcd and then burn the bin file using Nero...and this works. If you have the VCD, you can download "Isobuster" to extract the mpg file to play directly on Windows media player. If you still cannot play it after extracting the mpeg file, then the mpeg file may be corrupted somehow.

thanks a lot,
ive got it to work now.
ive also bought myself a standallown player for myself now (philips dvd 723) whitch also plays it.
thanks again -
i did 2 things:
1) i bought a dvd player lol.
2) i used vcd gear to make the .dat to .mpg the problem that i did was i was trying to write the file to the cd i was reading off (im stupid) and i diden't put into my c drive i had the output file on my E drive (my cd rom) after i changed it to my c drive it changed the file great and it played on meadia player fine.
