  1. I've recenly installed the DRU-500A, and I am experiencing terrible choppiness when playing DVDs (store bought AND burned). Occasionally PowerDVD locks up and/or crashes, and sometimes even reboots my system.

    Here are some choppy pics:

I have tried updating my drivers, installing the newest Windows2000 service pack, disabling background apps and anti-virus, upgrading the firmware, adjusting color depth and screen size, defragging, using different players and toggling DMA. I even tried giving the drive a stern lecture, and I'm pretty sure I heard it laugh at me.

My specs are in my profile, can anyone help me?

  2. yep...I have the exact same stuff with new 48X cd-rs. What solved it for me was firmware (not official) of lite-on. So if you have the latest sony firmware 1.0e then try different media.

  3. The problem isn't media, I'm having the problem with store bought DVDs.

I have the 1.0d Firmware, Sony's site says 1.0e hasn't been released yet. Has it, someplace else?

  4. Do you have the drive on the same IDE channel as your hard drive? Maybe you have drive contention for that channel?

  6. Last night I was fooling around in the BIOS, and I happened to disable DMA. It worked!

I could have sworn I'd already tried disabling it through some in-menu option, but I guess not. Thanks for the help, guys.
