I would (actually I did) update to 1.0d, it will probably save you from some coasters

  4. I bought my DRU500A in the USA last week. On my return to home I installed it on my PC (1.8Ghz Pentium, 768mb and XP Home with SP1) replacing my previous CD-writer as the Secondary Drive, and leaving the DVD player as the Master.

I decided to run the update immediately and followed the instructions that came in the Read Me for the firmware and is dated November 08, 2002. It worked perfectly, and as far as I have found out without any problems copying music CD's. I should add that I have not yet burnt any DVD's, but I figure if it will work for CD's it should be okay.

The only problems I had was when I came to install DLA after downloading it from the site that links from the software disk. When I tried to install it, it found Nero and would not let me go any further unless I allowed it to uninstall Nero first - I did not do this.

My next problem was that Nero, which came as OEM with the PC for the CD-Writer would not work with the Sony, so I had to go and purchase a serial number from Ahead! Bummer!

I would say go for it, but read the instructions first!

I just found a new page at Sony which gives more specific instructions than the read me that came in the zip file.

    It's worth reading this!

Man! What a set of instructions!

Should we hold our tongue out while "not handling the DRU-500A or interface cable"? <g> Yeah, I typically go inside my system and mess with the guts while updating firmware! Guess I better cut out that practice!

Does Sony know how much fun can be had with uninstalling EZCD or Direct CD on a WinXP system?

I did the "d" upgrade without knowing about or doing any of what they say. It hung at the end, but a forced reboot worked.

I would say that is one CYA set of instructions.

But, I will most likely follow it during the "e" upgrade! <VBG>

  6. Well it flashed fine, i stuck it into PIO-4 to do it it and had it as secondary master with nothing on slave.

I ahve since backed up some data on the supplied DVD+RW and burnt some home movie footage using MyDVD onto a Traxdate DVD-R (purple bottom) and it plays fine in my Sony S336 DVD player.

    So im happy
