I have been using the free BBMPEG to encode to XSVCD format and am pretty pleased with the result. There seems to be a lot of control of various filters and stuff and it is quite easy to use.
It seems people rave over TMPEGenc, but it is not particularly cheap with the MPEG2 capability. Am I missing something special that I don't know about in sticking with BBMPEG? What are the pros and cons of the two packages (apart from the obvious one of price)?

Well TMPGenc is pretty darn cheap, especially compared to other mpeg2 encoders.
Alot of people bash bbmpeg but the truth is that it is a very high quality encoder, almost as good as TMPGenc. But in my opinion it is bordering on useless because it is so incredibly slow.
The main benefits of TMPGenc over bbmpeg are speed and frequent upgrades. BBmpeg has not been upgraded in over a year, while TMPGenc comes out with new bugfixes and quality tweaks several times each month.
If you can get a hold of the 12a beta version of TMPGenc then you will get full mpeg2 support and it is totally free. This version has many more bugs than current TMPGenc releases but it should still be at least as high a quality as bbmpeg and I guarantee that it will be much faster.
If you plan on doing encoding alot then just buy TMPGenc. It is worth every cent. At the very least, download one of the demo's and see what it can do before deciding to stick with the very outdated bbmpeg.
