I got VideoLAN recently, using WinXP. DVDs play fine, switching the resolution while VL is running always causes it to crash (no biggie) but waht I find most annoying, the sound is horrible. Basically I feel like I'm listening to a radio with bad reception. In some loud scenes, I get a burst of static (for a fraction of a second the speakers just put out really loud white noise, is there a name for this?). This happens with everything I try to play in it, including DivX and MP3 files.
Lowering VL's volume and jacking up Windows's helps - a bit. But it's still quite bad.
I have a really cheap integrated sound card (VIA AC'97) but it's never this bad. Playing the same DVDs in PowerDVD gives clear sound.
I'm hoping someone has had a similar problem or at least heard of it. If I can't fix it fairly easily, I'll probably just give up on it and use something else.
