  1. I've been reading a lot of post and guides and am wondering something. Some people like to use 3:2 pulldown and framrate at either 24fps(30internal) or 23.976(29.97). Others like to use frame rate 29.97 and use encode mode Interlaced. What is the best method?

Let's say I have a movie I want to decode. In VirtualDub it say the movie runs at 23.976. What setting should I use in TMPGEnc? Thanks, been learning a lot from you guys.

  2. From a quality perspective, it's always preferable to encode at 24 fps and apply 3:2 pulldown.

However if the video was interlaced to start with, you can't really do that, so you have to use interlaced video (or use 30 fps and deinterlacing, but for MPeg2 and TV viewing, interlacing is the better option - for computer monitors, you actually might want to deinterlace instead, although most of the WinDVD/PowerDVD/etc. programs handle the deinterlacing on their own).

For TMPGEnc - you would set non-interlace for the source type on the advanced tab, and set 3:2 pulldown when playback for the Encode Mode: on the Video Tab.

  3. Wow , very quick response. Thanks a lot

Actually one more question.... When is it the right time to use the "inverse telecine" option?

  4. Much slower response now (was on vacation!). You use inverse telecine when the source was 29.97 fps but is derived from a film (24 fps) source. For instance, if you video capture a movie played on TV or a Laserdisc, there's a good chance that the source was FILM, so Inverse telecine will work for you.

Also, some on some DVDs, FORCED FILM from DVD2AVI doesn't work well - for those you can try IVTC. However, when using IVTC, I find you have to scan through the movie after doing the IVTC to see if there are any places where the "combing lines" still show up. This will happen on some things where sometimes it's film and sometimes it's not.......

It's kind of an art to get a good IVTC.....
    Cheers.

3:2 Pulldown is for a file with 23.976fps and Interlace is for a file with either 25fps or 29.97fps.

    Hope That Helps!!! :P
