  1. I have an ASF movie that I can play in Windows Media Player 7.1. I cannot scroll the movie in any way. I can only play the movie from the beginning to the end.

I can convert te movie to mpeg1 (vcd) with TMPGEnc. This takes about 14 hours. The movie is 2 hours. The conversion starts very fast, about 2 min. for 1 min. movie. Then at some point it gets realy slow.

After the conversion with TMPGEnc I have a mpeg file that I can play with Windows Media Player. Media Player indicates that the movie is now 2:35 min. The slider bar only scrolls for 3 mins. Then it is at the end. However the movie is still playing.

I used TMPGEnc to split the movie in two parts so I can make VCD's. After splitting the movie I can play both parts in Windows Media Player and the slider bar seems OK now. Now I have a new problem: At some point there is no sound in the movie. I don't know if the original ASF movie has the same sound problem, cause I could not scoll the movie to find out.

    Questions:
    1) Why cann't I scroll the ASF movie in WMP?
    2) Why is TMPGenc suddenly laking much more time?
    3) Is the sound problem a known issue (maybie it's like that in the original ASF movie)?
    4) Are there any way's to fix these 'problems'?

    Thanx in advance, MadSaid

Try finding a copy of VirtualDub v1.3 it supports ASF files, the newer versions do not.

Load the movie into Virtual Dub and you should be able to scroll through it.

  3. ASF Tools 3.1 suppoerts basic?advanced repair of wmv and asf which are interchangeable. it will also cut, split, join Very nice freeware. It will also reencode to avi. As for the unseekable part your file was probably truncated on download or joining. Tools will fix it fast

I fixed the index problem with ASF tools 3.1. The asf file is now scollable. However converting it to VCD with TMPGenc started fast again and became very slow. I stoped the proces after 10 hours (at 50%). I played the converten mpeg file. And again, after a couple of mins. there is now sound.

I also tried converting the ASF file to AVI + WAV with ASF Tools. No sound either. And the AVI file does not play!

    Any suggestions?

  5. I also had some difficulties with asfs... as a last resort, try using ASF tools to:

    1) basic repair
    2) re-encode that asf as an asf (not convert to avi)
    3) convert to avi

For some reason I had difficulties using straight asf sources, and direct conversions of the asf-->avi didn't work for me either... but reconverting, THEN converting to avi did. I dunno, it worked for me, it might help in your case.
