  1. I have found that there are many ways to skin a cat. I have numerous anolgue tapes that I want to put onto DVD. I am using Premiere for my captures. Does it make more sense to capture individual clips (with a plan of adding transitions etc...). Or should I capture the whole works and then convert the file to MPEG2 after I have added my transitions (can I add transitions between different scenes on a single large clip with Premiere?)? Also, when I capture my video, should I capture at the highest quality setting or should I capture to MPEG2? Time is an issue, and it seems that it would be very easy to get lost in the details. I also have TMPGEnc - which I have used with great success to convert from AVI to MPEG2. But this essentially becomes a 2 step process (maybe 3 if you include creating DVD). I also want chapters on my DVD. I believe I can add Chapter points in Premiere which can then be recognized by my DVD authoring software. I am somewhat murky on this point.

I'd greatly appreciate any advice (aka tutelage) on these questions.

  2. I would capture one big file. You can then either split it into seperate files afterwards (perhaps using freeware like scenalyser) or split it on the timeline in premiere using the cut tool.
Don't capture to mpeg2 if you want to add transitions afterwards as in my experience, premiere doesn't handle mpeg clips very well.

  3. forgot to mention.

I don't think you can set-up chapter points within premiere (I could be wrong). I usually make a note of chapter points whilst editing in premiere as a guide to add chapters in authoring software later on.

  4. Russ,

Many thanks for the advice. I'll take a look in Premiere and see what using the cut tool will do?

I'd also like to know what DVD authoring tool you are using and what your thoughts are on this topic.

    regards - Les
