  1. The most recent edition of a major consumer reporting magazine tested a number of standalone DVD players and recorders that had problems playing burned DVDs. Among them:

    Panasonic DVD-RV32K (wouldn't play DVD+RW)
    Toshiba SD-2800 (wouldn't play DVD+RW)
    Sampo DVE-631CF (wouldn't play DVD-RW)
    Zenith XBV243 (wouldn't play DVD+R or DVD+RW)
    Go-Video DVR4250 (wouldn't play DVD+R or DVD+RW)
    Sanyo DVW-5000 (wouldn't play DVD+R or DVD+RW)
    Toshiba SD-V280U (wouldn't play DVD+RW)

Additionally, there is apparently a recall/notice on Pioneer DVD recorders and DVD-R/RW drives. The problem listed was not being able to read new recordable DVDs resulting in units locking up and overheating. The recall is for 1 million recorders sold since 2001 including DVR-A03, DVR-A04, DVR-103, DVR-104, DVR-7000, and PRV-9000. Apparently, you can get a firmware fix at www.pioneerelectronics.com or by calling 1-800-421-1623.

This maybe talking about the firmware upgrades many folks have done on their Pioneer already.

None of the players listed are guaranteed to work with the formats listed. In fact, it is not surprising at all that the Panasonic and Toshiba units don't support +RW. It's their competitor.

And it sounds like they're just talking about the Pioneer firmware update.
