So I tried an off brand and now I'm paying for it.
I was using Verbatim and Apple... at $3 a pop. I didn't have a single problem burning with the Pioneer 105 and Toast, then I got cheap. I tried the 'Matrix' brand from these people Here . The first 20 or so were fine, except the 2x claim isn't valid for the 105, the only option is for a 1x burn. Then they began failing verification, like six in a row. It almost looks like the laser is burning the metal, little black spots inside the disk that weren't there before the burnTrying to copy the disk back to the HD fails with a disk error.
Anybody have success with cheap DVD-Rs? Care to recommend a brand? For less that a buck a piece?

I'm using 'Accu 4.7GB 1x' and got it from Meritline (37.50 for 50). They are working fine so far. Did you take a look at the dvd media comments here?

I ain't gotta a Mac I use a PC I built, but I have a Panasonic DVD-RAM/R that is real picky with media I get the Emtec DVD-R's from www.tigerdirect.com they are 26 bucks for 25 disc. Never had a bad one and they play on everything even my pos generic oritron DVD Player.

I have Pioneer 105 drive as well and for me, Princo -RW works wonderfully. I never had single trouble with this media and it is rewritable so why bother with just -R? They are about a dollar each at www.allmediaoutlet.com, cheaper than most -Rs.
I also have had success with OptoDisk -RW, Ritek -R, DVDPro -R but troubles with Supermedia -R. Only two toasters were all Supermedia out of about 20. By the way, these are all 1X. Ritek claims to burn at 2X but it's not for 105 drive. -
I have ordered both Ritek and Accu DVD-R's and DVDPro DVD-RW's from http://meritline.com/dvdrblankmedia.html with no hitches at all. I have ordered several times. They both also state compatibility with Apple's superdrive, which is what I use for burning. I have never paid more than $1/DVD.

I purchased 50 "white-topped" DVD-R's (lot #702886) from www.americal.com for $.85 per and 25 DVD-RWs (lot #702837) for about $42 (I think; check out prices on their website). So far they have worked flawlessly in my SuperDrive and on my Sony 315 and a few friends and family DVD Players. I have reused the DVD-RWs with excellent results as well.
I have burned them with Toast and Capty DVD. I haven't tried a direct burn from Disco+ yet, as I am still having some problems with Disco.
Ironically, one of my first 3 Maxell DVD-RWs is failing to erase. -
Look's like it's a crap shoot.....
That's the way I see it based on what I've read in the 'DVD Media' link and what people have posted. I needed something quick, so I went with the EMTEC's from TigerDirect. I was surprised to see the shipment coming from Illinois instead of Miami, Oh well. Illinois is still closer than Calif., but I miss the free shipping.....
So I ended up re-burning just about everything I'd burnt on the Matrix discs. Even the ones that had passed the verification had problems. I'll never buy those POSes again! The EMTEC's appear fine, my Pioneer 105, Toshiba SD-R1312, Samsung V2000, and Sylvania 6719DC loves 'em, not a single problem with the 20 disc's I've burnt. Now if I could just get a better deal on a larger amount, and cheaper shipping, I'd be....
