I just successfully upgraded my dru500a from 1.0d to 1.0f firmware.
I've tested DVD-R read performance with nero cd speed.
With 1.0d, the read speed was capped at 2X. Now, the read speed
is capped at 4X.
This is pretty good news for doing immediate verification of dvd burns.

Well this is better, but not great.
My Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-104 can read DVD+RW at its max (6X) speeds with no errors. I haven't tried the other 3 formats.
I don't know why Sony couldn't make the drive read writable DVDs at the max speed (8X). -
Yes, all the burned media read speeds seem to be needlessly capped at
the max write speed. I wonder if there's a technical reason
why there should be a cap, instead of attempting to read
at the max dvd-rom read speed.
