  1. Hi:

I am trying to capture video through a firewire from my DV camera.
Everything is fine except that I get jagged lines instead of straight lines.
I use a Sharp VL-PD3 camera and recorded at LP mode. I have SIIG 1394 3 port PCI firewire card. When I display on TV, lines are straight. Could you guess what might be the problem and how can I fix it?
It seems to me it is related to resolution, but even if at 320x240 preview
    mode lines are distorted.

    Thanks.

  2. Thanks for your response. I use Ulead MovieFactory to convert the
AVI to MPEG. I tried FieldA, FieldB and Frame options. If I burn these
onto a DVD-R and display on TV, I get less jagginess, but it is still
there. Do I need to deinterlace before encoding to MPEG? I tried to
use the VirtualDub, but it hangs.

  3. It will help greatly if you can show us a screen shot. Sounds like "stair- step effect". My guess is that you have a broken capture card that captures with wrong field order. There are two ways to correct this:

    1. If you capture with VDub, be sure to check Swap Fields option.

    2. Otherwise, you have to use Avisynth's SwapFields() filter to correct it.

  4. Yes, a straight line becomes like a stair case.

I tried another firewire card, same result.

Could it be the cable? If not, then it is the camera.

I cannot get the virtual dub work. It is said
it requires Video For Windows interface.

  5. I can see the jagged lines on the DV Camera's LCD screen too.
So, I think there is nothing wrong with the capture.
It seems I need an encoder that has good deinterlacing.
    Any suggestion?
