Can R2 DVDs be ripped and converted like R1 DVDs?

Hi all!

I've been converting some of my Region 1 movies to MPEG files so I can watch them on my laptop which doesn't have a DVD drive.

Recently, I've been considering buying some Region 2 DVDs, specifically the "Futurama" box sets that so far have only been released in Europe. Would it be possible to convert those DVDs in the same way I've been converting my Region 1 discs?

I'm using a combination of SmartRipper, DVD2AVI and TMPGENC to generate the MPEG files.

Yes, as long as your DVD-Rom is set so read region-2 discs

Yes you can. And your DVD-ROM does not necessarily have to be set to the correct region. I believe at least one of the rippers (DVD Decrypter I think) can use a mode (brute force mode or something) that does not require a correctly set region. It does take quite a while longer to rip tho.

I guess the next question would concern PAL/NTSC formats. Region 2 uses PAL, if I recall.

Would there be problems using DVD2AVI to create project files for TMPGENC? i know that TMPGENC has settings if the source project is in PAL format, and I'm guessing I would have to use those rather than the NTSC settings I'm using now.

Haematoma: It can be both NTSC or PAL.. Japan has NTSC Region 2 while Europe has PAL Region 2. It's not a mistake that Japan and Europe are both region 2 because they use a different video standard that makes the same region code okay (since most dvd players will play only PAL or NTSC).

As far as ripping region 2 discs (from Japan) and reencoding them, there's no problem with it at all, even on a RPC2 drive set to region 1 (no firmware released yet). I have bought many import DVDs from Japan and ripped them myself without a problem.
