Heres my problem..I have a digital8 sony camcorder TRV140....its set on sp mode when taking videos....now when I transfer to my laptop PC (toshiba 5105 s501) via its firewire port or my pcmcia firewire card the quality doesnt seem very good as compared to if I hook it up straight to my TV. I have put samples on CD @ DVD resolution (mpeg2 720X480) of course the transfer is to DV avi ....but I noticed that when I view the transfered clip (no reencoding) the bitrate is appx 3600. I have done some research and some say that hard drive speed can effect the quality of the transfer and my laptop HD speed is not equal to a desktop HD of either 5,200 or 7,200 RPM drive I think its like 4,200 RPM. Now I have also read that there is no lose in a DV camcorder transfer to a PC because its just a transfer and not a capture.....So should I start transfering to a desktop via firewire with a 7,200 RPM drive or will it make a differance and my quality problem lies somewhere else? also ..if I do need a faster HD to transfer to, would it help if I got and external 7,200 RPM drive connected to firewire or USB of my laptop or is there a bottleneck through the firewire and / or USB ports?
Any help is greatly appreciated
Oh...I transfer through media studio 5 se (uleads)
Also thinking of trying DVIO for transfer if it may help.

I have also a Sony Dig8 (Trv-140 E) and I like it very much.
I capture A/V with a fireware card (adaptec) with Studio 7 da Pinnacle Systems, later I prefer to edit the captured video(Avi) with the TMPEGenc. it's a freeware very good to edit and cut video. I have a PIII 866, 256 RAM, and a HD 20GB of 7200. The final result very good, better than if I edit with Studio 7.
My problem it's another, when I make brusque movements, when filming, the images seem to be trembled. Why this happens? Have you the same problem? I have one another analogical Sony camcorder(Sony Trv-48 E) that, despite the quality of the image being inferior, it does not make this. How to resolve this problem? or it will be natural with Digital Camcorders?
Thank's

Do you have image stabilization ON or OFF? Im not sure what your describing "when I make brusque movements, when filming, the images seem to be trembled" Id have to look some of those words up...LOL....anyway whichever setting your on try the other and see if it helps.
Still not sure what my prob. is Ill have to do some testing ,thought maybe someone on the forum might have transfered to laptop via firewire and might have a suggestion...I cant believe my transfered bitrate is so low...Im hopeing its just HD speed. and nothing else.

A few PCMCIA firewire cards where given bad press in Computer Video Magazine due to them dropping a lot of frames. Laptops with built in firewire can fair better but some are not OHCI compliant i.e. ones in Sony VIAO that need there drivers switching with some software.
